Putting the weight of the gear shifting mechanism in the frame rather than the hub will reduce the unsprung weight, which will improve handling on bumpy turns. Having the chainring above the crank will improve ground clearance. These will be definite advantqaages for a very limited number of riders, but there will also be the bling factor.
