The camera is fine (Canon S40), macro focus at that range is a PITA (i.e. the blanket is not supposed to be in focus). Any closer and there's no perspective. Like I said, click on it (in a real browser, like Firefox) and magic enlargement happens. But anyway, the photography debate is for another day. I threw up just the full-size closeups from the above pics:

I'm posting this to get feedback regarding whether people thing its a cosmetic issue or structural. What threw me is the bike shop claimed these are normal flaws from the original manufacturing process (i.e. "Fact of Life" for the R3), which struck me as odd. So if you buy a new R3 frameset... give it a very good inspection.
