you don't NEED cadence. But I especially love it for indoor training sessions. I have a Cateye Astrtale 8 (wired w. cadence) on my trainer and love it for intervals and especially DVD's where they tell you what cadence ranges to stay in.

Since using cadence on my trainer I also use it on the road. I use it a lot to monitor my climbs and to help decide when to switch to a lower gear (I perfer spinning at 85+ on climbs).
