Replacing 9 sp cassette – decisions, decisions

Due to neglecting chain wear, I now also need to replace the cassette on my 27 speed hybrid. It is a HG50 12-23 cassette, with 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23 teeth sprockets.

The sprocket that is most worn is the one with 17 teeth. This made me think that it might be a good idea to get a HG70 13-23 cassette, as I notice they come in this configuration: 13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23. I was thinking that it will make sense to have one more sprocket in the area where I seem to do most of my biking , as the 18 bridges the gap between 17 and 19 on my old cassette.

I do not think I will be missing the 12 sprocket much. But is the practical difference between 17 and 18 really big enough to bother with?

Comments appreciated.

Erling.
