I think we may be talking about different things. Newer Shimano Ultegra (and Dura-Ace) cassettes mount the larger cogs onto a "spider". You may be able to separate the cogs from the spider, but they will be unusable as single cogs, because they've had the inner portion removed (presumably for some weight savings).
