no, the kashimax uses that bouncy ball rubber compound and it really does protect the tube from hard hits. tying a rag around your bike won't really help in the event of a crash. i guess it prevents paint dings if you're sloppy with lifting the bike up or something, but the kashimaxes are designed to save the frame in the event of the kind of major wipe-outs you see in keirin races. i doubt a bandana would do that, in the extremely unlikely event any keirin rider would be so pikey as to do that
