History of shifters

My memory says that, on street bikes, shifters gradually migrated from the downtubes to the stem and then onto the bars as thumb shifters (and then as bar ends?). If that's accurate, is there a way to use that information to help zero in on the age of a bike?

(And if it's not accurate, what is the history?)
