Why the hell does everyone think that putting 8 or 12 spokes through the holes and loosely threading on the nipples is an incredibly complex and time-consuming job??? You don't have to build a ****ing wheel, just lace it up quarter of the way. Takes about 50 seconds. Why would the lockring be hard to get off? Needs some hand-eye coordination to keep the wrench on... oh well.
Tighten up the bearings enough to resist the force of removing the cog? That'll only happen if you can make the balls dig into the bearing surface. At that point you might as well dremel the hub in two to salvage the cog...
