Recovery/ rest day from yesterday's shoveling marathon (hit hard in North NJ with the snow)

Starting week 3 of trainer roads short power build plan. IMO, I really like the workouts and plan. I like the structure and instruction you get throughout the workouts

3hrs z2 steady on sat
3hrs team ride yesterday. Well 2hrs, then I did some work myself: 1x15' up Soledad, steady z4 and ramping to 400+ on the steeps, then a hot lap around Fiesta (10') at FTP.

today: off
tomorrow: 2x30' at ~91%, Fiesta Island

Then W and Th off because I'm having an endoscopy on W. Hopefully i'll get these gut issues sorted out; wouldn't be surpised at all to find that I have a peptic ulcer. I'm fine when I'm on the Prilosec, but when I stopped taking it a month or so back my symptoms came back. Anyways, W is off for obvious reasons (don't want to train and then not eat!) and I expect to be recovering from being malnourished on Th. I'll do some light ab/upper body work on Th.

Then big weekend on the bike! F/S/Su.

I had an enjoyable ride but was not happy with my time. This TT business inevitably fills me with regret.

No matter, I like it anyway. And I like the work it takes to get there. And the bike itself. So its all just good.

Good luck with the endoscopy.

Just noticed your list of bikes. You had the Rock Lobster with you yesterday? Pale green bike? I noticed it but paid you no mind. Still could not pick you out in a crowd. Lol.

This season is weird. This is the first in about 6 there is no pressure to do anything. Junior is now rowing only 2-3 days a week (on the water), gym 3 days and riding 3 or so days. It adds to about 16-20 hours doing something, but not really focused on anything. The rowing is eye opening. I had no idea a HR could be run at extended periods (5 min) of time 2-3 beats off max. Pretty clear that his cycling can't do that with legs alone.
Which has me thinking putting more mass on the legs is something that can be powered by the cardio system. Also higher profile rims that typically take 2-4 BPM more than low profile to ride are being selected over the lower profile options. It also has me wondering if TTs should be finished in a sloppy all out sprint like fashion way earlier as cardio can certainly handle it.

Thanks.

And no, that wasn't me, there are two of us! His is pale green, and he rides it primarily. Mine is yellow, and I use it for long rides with significant climbing. I ride a silver caad9 the rest of the time.

I did the last 10min of a 10Km run at 203bpm when my max was 206bpm.

You bring up the whole point of system balance. I don't know if it is genetics, age or training. My heart could never handle my legs - heart was small, yet I could chat while at my max and my legs never burned. Now they do. My son seems to have more cardio than his legs or body can use. To me (repeating) he can add leg mass.
I think ideally you want to train to be like you - for a TT. Your cardio seems to be at the limit of what the rest of your body demands. I'd rather see training to max cardio capability than power. Of course both would increase.

Started training 'for real' again a couple weeks ago and was surprised by how far the FTP dropped so I've been playing around with trying to improve my sprint because I feel it is less demoralizing. Today I managed to get lifetime bests at 1-10s and my sprints were pretty consistent which is cool. Its probably some combination of increased body mass and beginner gains, but if I think if I keep practicing I should be able to at least hold the numbers as I get into shape. Practicing sprint has forced me to think about which cadences work best for me to use to produce power and what form works best when sprinting. Plus, now that I feel a lot less spastic sprinting I think I'd be more likely to attempt it in a group (which is inevitably where most of the challenges to actually winning a sprint lie)

2 hours, something around tempo for most of it.

Warm out, no arm warmers/gloves for most of it! Even though I passed a few people in full winter gear lol.

I totally almost did the one yesterday but 8:30am for Cat 4's is a lot less palatable than your 3:30pm start time. I think I'm going to try the Red Kite circuit race in two weeks instead.

Z4 this morning .. unexpected freezing rain shortly after I started riding motivated me to warm up less and interval more. 2x20 + 1x10 in 1:14 total ride time. It didn't feel too slippy under my wheels (just put on new tires yesterday, actually) but when I got home I was unable to walk up the icy stone walkway to my front door.

the inside ride rollers are like cheating and are so so so much more enjoyable than riding the trainer.

Best workout in a long time. 4x10min, 5min rest in between. Started off really hard on each interval, trying to train my body for race starts, far and away my weakest point.

Good average power, and no real drop off on any.

one of my favorite workouts. just long enough to be a whole different came as opposed to 5' intervals but short enough to be much more intense than 20'.
