Haven't really taken that much time off. I did just get back from Italy. I brought a bike with me and got a decent amount of riding in (Though I got less riding in than I normally do since I was doing touristy things). I think that a mixture of Jet Lag and diet are contributing to me feeling a bit off.

day-off ride with @scheibo yesterday.

for me, ended up being just under 80 miles, 5500ft of climbing at 20.3mph. AP 240, NP 285. 250tss. A couple efforts but mostly just trying to stick to z2-ish riding for fat metabolism purposes. I did the ride fasted and ate about 350 calories over the 4 hours and felt good considering the 3440kj. 850kj/hour is way higher than I anticipated being able to be comfortable at fasted, so that's great.

~3 hours z2 with a couple of 15 min sweet spot efforts thrown in for ~150tss. Skipped breakfast on accident, but I ate plenty last night, and had a gel and some sports beans during. Kinda hungry by the end but not bonking hungry. Doing a big long climb tomorrow, should be around 4.5-5 hours with maybe 1:15 of that steady climbing, with 2 sets of 15m in a big gear. Should be fun!

Do you think jet lag matters [for riding performance]?

End of block, AKA let's pile on MAXIMUM TSS when you're already feeling tired.

3x15 today with 7min recoveries at FTP + a lot of hours. I'm not sure if it's FTP anymore though because the watts were equal across the board at vi of 1, and I was alternating nose breathing/mouth breathing. I thought about a 4th but...lots of hours this weekend.

Tomorrow is death march protocols.

It is possible to eat more than a dozen eggs in a day, FYI.

I hate rollers.
Raining today and we had to do our monthly grocery trip so I did a quick roller workout. Yeah, 3x8 sweet spot is insanely hard on rollers. Even had to get off between sets, hurt the muscles so bad. Yet 5x8 VO2 outside wasn't a problem the other weekend. Holy balls rollers are boring. Even during cool down I'm just staring at the timer counting down the boring ass seconds!

ugh, ctl dropped from 77 to 41 in 4 weeks. combo of busyness, being tired by the time I have time to myself at night and the past few days being sick.trying to make myself not care because I think the busyness is going to continue for a while

Just try to keep riding, its so easy to quit with it being so cold out. After about the 3rd bout of a flu, I just checked out for like 3 months.

Got dressed, came out to find a flat tire, which took awhile to fix since it was due to a tiny piece of wire that required several attempts with a needle nose pliers to extract. Finally get going, it starts to rain. Then, about a mile from my house I stop at a light, twist my foot, and the whole pedal comes off the spindel.

One of those days, I guess.

Did family pictures this morning, was going to get on the trainer afterward. Got home and fell asleep on the couch. 0 training today. Need to start getting ready to kick things back into gear, need to think about setting up some structure here soon

4 hours today in partial rain. First time wearing my thermal Jersey and shoe covers this winter, was quite comfortable, if a bit warm on the climbs. 240 TSS and 60 yesterday.
Good enough for a rainy weekend I guess.

I've been staying on the flats because I'm fat af but decided to do Oak Glen today. Prior to the ride I was like, should I do one or 2 loops? Halfway into the first loop I was like, should I turn around or just stop?...3700 ft over 33 miles, 1275 kjs. Definitely a dose of reality. Still lots of work to do.

This. I'm told Zwift helps, maybe instead of counting down the boring ass seconds you instead count down the boring as distance between your avatar and the finish line?

Yeah, CTL drops super quickly. Its quite frustrating, especially if you care.

Which thermal jersey? I'm pretty sure the gabba I bought a month ago was the best purchase I ever made.

Played hooky to ride long with Ygduf on Friday - no one seemed to care that I didn't turn up at work until 1:30pm. Not sure whether to be happy or sad about that... Fun ride though, at least for me. Got antsy and jumped out on a climb or two, but most of the ride was just sitting in the draft and not contributing . Got to try some new roads too, which is always a highlight for me.

Rainy weekend, but since I bought some fenders I at least got an excuse to give them a try. Couldn't figure out how to install the front one (anyone know if the raceblade sks front fender is supposed to fit on a caad10?), but the rear one seemed to work out OK - the only part of my body dry after 1h45 was my tailbone.

Just light drizzle when I set out today, wanted to do a climb and maybe get 2-3h in, but when I hit the foothills I realized that my shifting was borked and my only choices for climbing were 34-28 or 34-19 which is not really ideal for me. Ended up just circling back to the shop and getting it fixed. Its probably good I turned around early though, it started pouring on the way back and it was pretty cold - I only got in 1h30 but I was half worried about getting pneumonia. Also really regretted not wearing the velotoze (it *looked* clear enough outside to justify not spending 10 minutes before and after the ride fiddling with them), but getting instantly soaked through to my socks when it started pouring was a teachable moment.

I'm not technically savvy enough to figure out zwift, plus indoors would be too loud for our landlords downstairs. I rode on the porch with some music. What feels like 20 minutes go by and I'm like Holy crap, it's still the same song!?

Some Pearl Izumi one I bought when I first started riding. Probably got it off The Clymb cuz I'm cheap. But it's so much warmer than my race jerseys and doubles arm warmth (arm warmers underneath). I wear it all winter in the 30s with base layer and wind vest. Today was warm enough with the rain, but I'd never go out in rain under 45 degrees or so.

what's your ventilation like? proper airflow (not temperature--airflow is the key) helps.

focused work on the rollers is where it's at; sounds like you were doing that and still had a problem. is there something you can watch (laptop/tablet)? i like watching a CX race or something.

you also may be experiencing issues with the low inertial load -- it makes things harder (or at least feel harder) for sure. a couple sessions and you adapt, though.

Ventilation? I was just outside, slight breeze maybe. Upper 50s temperature.

I've only done rollers a few times and can't stand more than an hour so I have to be focused on something or I feel like it's a waste. I can go outside for 4 hours and thoroughly enjoy seeing the sights and going places. On the rollers I'm just like oh I'm still home, that's lame! The main thing I like about bike riding is getting as far away as time allows, seeing the ocean, the redwoods, etc. And the best thing about a threshold effort is that it's usually on a hill and WEEEE descend after! Rollers provide nothing interesting. But that's the mental part.

The other part is 3x8 at ~285 on rollers was just as hard as last weekends 5x8 at 350 on the road. One thing may be that on the road I naturally breath harder to provide oxygen for efforts, but on the rollers I discovered I really had to keep reminding myself that it'll be easier if I breathe enough! Also the strange muscle pains - rollers definitely hit different/more muscles, which I imagine has to be a good thing, but I hate seeing subthreshold numbers for intense effort.

you have no real airflow -- when you are riding @ 300w you are generating a bunch of heat (~900w worth), and without significant ventilation your body winds up either using energy to deal with it or if it can't dump heat then shutting down.

even at low speeds outdoors, eg 15mph, there is significant cooling going on.

and, yes, with a low-inertia flywheel (or equivalent), you have to work harder, or at least in a different way, to keep things moving. one adapts pretty quick.

8' vo2? ouch! seems like no-man's land, but i assume you have a master plan.

fully agree that outdoors is better, but weather/daylight/schedules don't always permit and it is nice to have it as a tool. some folks do just fine with aimless rides indoors; to me that is a recipe for burnout, but each to his own.

Watched "Inspired to Ride", was actually an absolutely great thing to watch while doing 3X20s of tempo on the trainer. I was watching people who were doing 300 miles a day and I was "feeling their pain". Also something that is really cool about it was that the 4th place guy, Jesse, is a guy I know pretty well from the local racing scene. Really really nice guy, and I knew he liked doing distance, but DAMN.

Planned on a pair of 3 hour rides this weekend. Saturday, I was feeling good, almost halfway in when I had the dumbest crash I've had in forever. One hand on bars, one coming back from my pockets when I hit a random big jagged rock in the middle of the lane. Knocked my hand off the bars and I fell over on my left side. Some road rash on my elbow, thigh and ankle, but those weren't the problem. I smacked the top of my kneecap into the bar end at some point during the crash, tried to continue but it got painful enough to pedal that I made the call of shame and got my wife to come get me. No lasting injury as far as I can tell, but still swollen and painful enough on Sunday a bad idea. Pretty annoyed. I need things to start breaking my way, already.
