You mean riding the velodrome as part of training for road-races? Yes, it will help your sprint tremendously. However, don't sacrifice a road-training ride for it. So do velodrome on Tuesdays or whatever day you have planned for sprint-workouts. That'll let you keep your other workouts of intervals, tempo, hill-intervals, hill-climbs, and endurance rides on schedule.

Remember, once you go track, you never go back.

Real men race track because football, basketball, baseball, golf and road cycling only require one ball!

It can help more than your sprint, depending on what you do. Intervals on the track are very effective for increasing your fitness. If you actually go out and race on the track you'll get a lot more practice in tactics than in the same amount of time road racing.

The words "fast" and "close" will have different meanings than for most of your friends who don't ride the track.
