Well, that isn't actually a record, the record being Hugh Duffy's .440 in 1894. That year, 1894, was one of those years in which everybody hit for average--the league BA was .309, so I'm not suggesting that Duffy's achievement exceeds Williams' (when the league BA was .266), just that the conditions were as favorable for high BAs as could be. The year Garciaparra hit .372 the league BA was .276. We can have another .400 hitter, we just need a season in which a league averages .300 or better.

Edited to add, well, that and a batter having a great year for BA.

It was rumored that not only did they not conduct drug tests, but that the track was about 10m short at the Chinese national meet. Reason? You can't find pictures of the track, or the meet, anywhere.
lol. Are you insinuating that the Chinese CHEAT?

I used to roll around on the floor laughing when the Chinese womens swim team was shown on the telly. Bloody frightening.

Ok. The record to top them all.

Tasmanian cricket legend David Boon drank 52 cans of VB beer between Sydney and London.

Boonie is an Aussie hero.

Saw the "Keg on Legs" wandering around in the Members at the G on Boxing Day. Even MCC members give a cheer when Boony walks past

Actually if trends continue this may well fall. Compare to Wooden, 20-22 game season and only 4 possible tournament games. No surprise if 20 years from now the season is 6-10 games longer than it is now (counting invitationals) and that someone eventually breaks this one.

The thing is some of the records mentioned, like Flojo, haven't stood for that long. We're talking about some records that have stood for decades, like Alfredo Binda's stage wins until cipo broke it. That was like 70+ years...
Finally back to cycling! BUT Cipo only broke one of Bindas stage records. His 12 stage wins in a single Giro looks good for 70 more years or more.

How can anyone ride over 80,000 miles in one year? That is a double century plus every stinking day!!!!
Even the official record of 75000+ would require a double century every day.

I'd go with this one over any listed so far:

At the Big Ten meet in Ann Arbor on May 25, 1935, Jesse set three world records and tied a fourth, all in a span of about 45 minutes.

EDIT:

Some sources count this as 5 broken as his times in the 220 yeard and 220 hurdles broke the records for the equalivent 200 meter events (those events are about 1 meter shorter).

Even the official record of 75000+ would require a double century every day.
I rode 13,715 miles in 2006, and that was a LOT of riding, an AVERAGE of 37.57 miles every single day over a 365 day span. Riding 75K miles on a bicycle (more than 5 TIMES my total, by far a lifetime high for me) is utterly around the bend, mind blowing, incomprehensible to me. At 17mph (a somewhat optimistic and rather brisk average speed for a fit adult male cyclist riding that volume) you would have to spend 11-12 HOURS PER DAY on the bike FOR 365 DAYS STRAIGHT to eclipse that mark.

I'd say that 75,000 mark is rather secure. Anybody feel like 'going for it' in 2007? Hurry. 3 days are gone already. By the way, I move that if you break that record, we forgoe all drug testing. EPO, cocaine, amphetamines - I'd say whatever you need would be fine.

Oh yeah, I'd say the same thing to anyone who wants to win seven Tour de France races. Whatever works. Let us know if you win them, and we'll start the drug inquisition afterwards. That's how they did it with Lance.

I think Val Perovic has a similar record: something like 37 cans in 2 or 3 hrs

I once did 10 pints of Theakston's Old Peculiar in 3 hours at uni after playing the local Army base rugby club. The 10 pints did little to dull the pain. Nothing close to 37 tins of fizz I'll admit ...

Good pick up Ozman. I was gonna mention that. There's a plaque on the wall at the 'Duke of Wellington' apparently.

The last Ashes series was painful. You buggers aren't human. There's only 20 million or so of you for staters, naff-all actually play cricket or Union for that matter and yet look at the results. WTF are you people putting in the water over there?! My uncle went over 35 years ago ... often wonder why my father didn't follow.

[edit] On a completely tangental note ... seeing Dennis Lillie in real life was a thing of grace. Nobody will ever have an action like that ever again. It was so sublime you never actually knew just how lethally fast the guy really was.[/edit]
