Could be he lost focus when Matt hit that shadowy spot.

Yeah, good point with the sudden contrast drop there. Not sure where focus went though. Looking along the edge of the road, I don't see focus anywhere. Maybe it came close, and the focused bits were cropped out in post. Still a great shot, but forensics on this stuff helps with my own shots down the road. Too bad EXIF data have been stripped -- would be good to know what body is doing the hunting there. I think my 1D mark iii would have this situation sorted.

Especially if you're just posting it to the web like I am.. blowing it up for a poster might be different.

+1. There's about a mile of air between that pedal and the pavement. Back in the day (aka 2009), I was riding with Look Delta clone pedals, and I scuffed pedals pretty regularly in crits. NBD; as long as you don't seriously dig, you're fine. Eventually I upgraded to Speedplay Zeros, which I've used ever since. I don't think I've ever touched one of those down. Short cranks (I ride 165mm) help as well.

The only memorable strike a bridging effort. I was trying really hard to establish a gap with 2 to go. I started pedaling out of a corner too early and completely pole vaulted both wheels into the air -- I was way too far over to start pedaling (doing 32 in this corner vs. 27 every other lap). When I came down, since I was moving tangential to the curve and was still yawing, my rear tire had an enormous side load that pulled the bead over the hook. Thump thump thump BOOM! The tire went and I had to pull out. Unclipped and walked back to the car.
So, the key is to stay calm. Pretty much all the time, no matter what.

I dug my pedal pretty bad in a turn in a crit last year. Was flying through the corner tailgunning and wasnt paying attention to where my pedal was. The rear wheel skipped out to the side pretty bad, but I was able to keep it up. A couple guys a few bikes up looked back at me..surely to see if I had went down or not. Thats one way to make sure you are awake.

ah but he didn't crash either. It's not the winning part, it's the not crashing part.

My pedal, my picture, after a race where I dug a few times. I'm still on the pedals, and that picture was from Aug 2012.
Incidentally I use 175 cranks. I used to race 167.5s with a half axle (Gipiemme) pedal, and then with Aerolite pedals that gave almost 40 degrees clearance (lean angle, based on a 170 crank). Even those I dug regularly, and they dug nicely due to the first 1/4" of material being plastic.
