Sprott, Al TT
My first TT ever! also my first race on my Motobecane Nemesis. Great bike by the way, i recommend picking one up; for only 1200 bucks, it's a steal.
Finding Sprott was interesting, it is literally 1 store on the corner of an intersection. There was a good turnout from local teams. I met a guy from the auburn team, and a few other people out for a good sufferfest.
The race was 40k and my goal was sub 1:10 for my first ITT. The course was dead flat out and back. After a moderate warm-up, i made my way to the start time. The organizers had a novel idea to have your start time the same as your race number. Impressive stuff. Anyway after shaking my nerves, i'm in the starting blocks:
lining up:
And i'm off!
I settle in at around 180 bpm and keep the cadence constant. Little did I know there was a slight tailwind that I would have to fight on the way back. At 6 minutes, the guy who started a minute behind me caught me. 6. This guy was FLYING. I was worried, seeing as though i didn't have a computer so i had no idea how fast i was going. It turned out he was just a beast as i caught my minuteman 20 minutes in.
I hit the turnaround at 31:30 averaging 23.67 and promptly hit a 5mph headwind. Slightly dissapointing turning around as i was feeling smooth.
At 40 minutes in, my minuteman caught back up! OOPS. even worse, at 50 minutes, the guy 2 minutes back catches me! man these guys were tough.
Finally the 1km to go sign comes into view and i finish with my hr monitor saying 1:09:48. Just under my goal. I'm pretty excited seeing as though it's my first tt and I haven't trained for that discipline at all. I'm just doing base miles this summer for next season.
Overall, riding at your personal limit is fun, but you have to be sure of yourself and your pacing. Too confident and you'll blow up. Gun shy and you won't be as fast as you could be.
Avg hr for 1hr 10min: 182
Time (unoffical): 1:09:48
Avg spd: 21.38
I didn't grab my official time though, i was WAY too sore to ride to the tent. Word of advice: do some tt effort training before you ride at LT for an hour
When i got back to the car and started packing up, i spun my front wheel to check true. it stopped after 5 seconds! my front brake didn't come undone from the turnaround! Looks like the wind wasn't as bad as i thought.
Can't wait to get fitted to the bike and some aero wheels. hell i should just take the brakes off
Me 200m out:
*special thanks to my roommate for the use of his tt helmet.
