Timpani Crit Aug 3rd roll call
I have seen a few of your names on the registered list. So whose racing and what class?
Im doing the cat 5 and most likely the 35+ masters open. I usually get beat down in the open race but its great training. Im working the start finish area in the afternoon, thats why the open race is not for sure yet.

I am doing the Cat 5. This will be my first race. I will be the short grey-haired guy in a generic Specialized jersey with the lost look on his face. I am fully prepared for whatever happens

I am in for CAT4. I have been somewhat frustrated with Crits lately, so just might do something stupid like soloing off the front for as long as I can before poping and being spit off the back. Will see. *shrug

I'm in the E4s. Goal this time around is a pack finish

On that course it's pretty easy. It's flat, not technical. Biggest worry is avoiding crashes. When I did it last time as a 5 i stuck around watching 4's race. In final sprint there were couple people who were pushed in to a truck parked at the start/finish line.

Hey UD, I'm up for a flyer or five. I'm SO close to that Cat. 3 upgrade that I'm willing to mess around a little bit before landing in the big boys. Look for the junior in the SJBC kit riding the red S-Works E5.
Anyone else want to come along?

Hey BigSean, was good seeing you today. I hope your race went better then my CAT4. Last few laps were like watching a train wreck in slow motion, which came on the back stretch of final lap. heh. Seems like the less technical the crit is, the more dangerous it is.

I think **** started to hit the proverbial fan with about 4 to go. I mean there were few close calls prior, but it went down hill fast towards the end. Seriously I don't know whether it was the size of the field or what, but cornering skills were seriously lacking.
Wait weren't you going to do 4's?

the 5s had two crashes. this was my 10th race so i'm upgrading to 4 now. I guess it won't be any better crash-wise in the 4s tho from what I've seen during the season.

Instead, I got 9 stitches on my cheek.

I did the 4s. I was near the front-ish for quite a bit. I didn't see any sketchiness in the corners, except a couple of guys who hit cones coming out of turn 1. The wreck on the back straightaway happened, oh, 5 feet in front of me. I went down as I ran over a bike. I was actually looking for a top 10-20 finish.

Well it went well. Not quite was I was hoping for, but I trie some different tactics in this race. Im usually a conserve and relax racer. Today I was the opposite. I rode at the front for the majority of the race. At one point I attempted to bridge to the break until I noticed I was just dragging the pack up to it, so I sat up. Went to the back for a lap, then moved back up. I was getting really frustrated with the slowing down on the back straight. String out the field, then let em all come back. Made for alot of traffic in turns 3 and 4. Well when this happened on the final lap, I had enough. Figured Id try and break away and try to hold it to the finish. Backfire!!! Turned out to be a great leadout for the group. I survived about halfway down the final straight, and blew about 100yards from the finish. Serves me right since I have not done any 1and 2 minute intervals in over a month.
All in all it was a good race for me. Although no a great finish at 19th, I helped make the finish a bit safer, got to try some different tactics, and had alot of fun. Sorry I didnt get to meet any of you. Umney, it was good to see ya, its been a while.

Overall, it was a good race for me. I agree that the slowing down on the back stretch was a little annoying. Even when the pace ramped up the last couple of laps, I found myself coasting way too much sitting 15th wheel (or so) before turn 3.
I would have like a "result" as this was my 2nd cat 4 race, an I'm going to probably never finish well in a hilly road race. I did learn, however, a few things about racing, although I really wanted to see what I had at the end.
