So anyway - back to Mt Washington.
Been keeping tabs on the weather the past week, seems like the summit temps are a bit higher than I'm expecting.
Part of me is praying for good weather, part of me wants it as miserable as it can get...without it forcing a cancellation again, of course.

The weather and wind have looked rather peaceful the past week...
But Accuguess.com and other weather outlets have it raining Friday and Friday night...
Might make the gravel sections a little muddy...
But how can anyone guesstimate the weather on Washington a week in advance...
I tried to do 45 minutes of Tempo yesterday and could only finish 30 minutes and about 20 watts lower then my usual Tempo workouts...
It does not look good...
I am going to try a ride outside later today...

I hope it's 110 degrees.
And locusts.
And locusts.

Here is an account from a fellow Skylands Cycling member:
Climbing Mt. Washington is THE hardest physical accomplishment I have ever done in my entire life. I’ve completed three marathons and several triathlons and well know the meaning of pain. Once you cross the entrance bridge you coast for about .1 miles until the hill starts. This is when the reality of gravity just slaps you in the face. You come upon the initial slope of about 15% where it undulates between 10-15% with micro (10ft) grades of 7%. At about 1.5 miles you are smacked down with a grade of 21% and knowing you still have a little over 6 miles to go you start to question you sanity. In between this and the 2.5 mile mark (17%) are grades between 10-15%. You continue on thinking you have lost you mind (and your wind) with grades mostly between 13-18%, with micro gaps of about 7%. At the 6.25 mile mark you get hit with another 21% grade and you start thinking how far back the broom wagon is. At this point though you are convinced you can finish by either riding, walking, or crawling. You reach the 7 mile mark knowing you have less than 1 mile to go and you start thinking you can smell the finish. At about 7.4 miles you even hit a slight (-3%) downhill, but unfortunately it only lasts about 30 ft. After that the grade goes back to 10% with kicks up to 19%. You make the final turn and hear everyone cheering you on and you go smack dab into a grade of 22% for the final .1 miles. You wonder what cruel gods could have done this to you as you inch up the final few meters. As you come to the finish the announcer calls out your name for all to hear and you know you are there. As you cross the finish line you know all your suffering, and in my case drooling is over. Volunteers catch you from falling as you cross the finish line and place a blanket around you. This was a good thing because at the start of the base the temperature was 80 degrees and calm. It is now 50 degrees with 25mph winds (calm for the summit). My first thought is never again unless I can get liposuction and lose 40 lbs. before I try it again. Then sets in the emotions of the accomplishment (and the fact that it is over) and you start to smile again.

Here is a breakdown of the age groups done by some posting in the Mt Washington Forum...
"I took the contents of the posted rider list for this year and plugged it all in to a spreadsheet. Then, with a little number-crunching, I was able to get some numbers for the different waves and age groups. Here's what I came up with:
Wave 2 (20-34, 35-39) = 164
Wave 3 (40-44) = 131
Wave 4 (Juniors, 45+) = 316
I also did a more detailed breakdown by age group. Here are the number of riders in each age group:
10 and under = 1
20 and under = 16
30 and under = 25
40 and under = 162
50 and under = 269
60 and under = 109
70 and under = 21
80 and under = 8
90 and under = 0"

I hope I can still ride Washington when I'm 70+.
Hell, I wouldn't mind trying it at 90. If you go... you go...
Hammer - you did 1:23 last year with a 228 watt average? How much did you weigh?

Last year I did not have a PowerTap and used Northeast Cycling calculator to figure my power...
I was 137 pounds last year. This morning I was under 132 pounds (5' 7")...
I put out 270 watts on Ascutney for just over 30 minutes and 265 watts for just over 45 minutes on Equinox...
I was hoping for around 245/250 watts and a time under 1:15 for Washington but again right now I am thinking of bagging the whole ride...
It is always fun talking about wattage with people after a race. I may beat them in the race, but put out 60 -70 fewer watts...
Good to be a lightweight climber...

Sorry to hear of your situation...
Hope you are doing well and will be back next year...
If you could package up 10 - 15 watts and send it my way I would appreciate it...

Great ride and I finished...
Would like to have done better...
Weather was great for the early finishers but then it rained and hailed...
Holy cow it hailed...
Report to follow when I decompress a while...

I was actually thinking about you on Friday - one of my distant relatives is recovering from your version of the pox.
Congrats on the finish. Hail, wow... that must've been fantastic.

Hail! The 22% grade was like a carpet of pea sized marbles .5" deep. It was coming down harder then I've ever see hail! I was spotting riders up the last grade and caching some before they fell. I lost a couple on a tandem though. It was just to much with the standing on marbles and me being tired and all. I did slow their fall down though.
Other news, my spare wheel got second place!

It was an Ultagra hub laced to a Sun M17A. I pulled my 9sp cassette for Nico, he slapped on his 10, did a rushed cable adjustment and he was off.
I did not do as well. 1:38:14. 44 seconds slower then in July.
Good to see you Hammertoe! Come over to the Dark Side! Feel the Power of Tubulars!

Wow...
That is some special wheel and a great story...
May I borrow it next race...
Tubulars will have to wait. I have spent WAY too much on this sport this year!!!

Forgot that this was this weekend, I did the running race up the mountain back in June. I was somewhat disappointed at the weather being reasonably good for that as I was hoping to really suffer. It was around 75 and sunny at the base, rather windy/foggy/overcast and ~40 at the very top.
I posted some of this on the NE forum section, but I camped out the rainy night before, did 1:23 on foot, then ran down the trails afterwords with my pack that a nice spectator drove to the top when I asked at the base. My legs felt nice and wobbly when I got back to the start (missed the trail I meant to take back to the start and ended up at Pinkham Notch with a few miles to run uphill again to the auto road). The drive back to Boston after that was entertaining as my body decided it wanted to go to sleep.
For power numbers, at 6'2" I was maybe 160/165 with clothes running up so 220-230w from that NE Cycling Calc, not that these things translate. I did treat it as more of an experience than a race, taking in the scenery with walking breaks and such. Had to save a sprint for the wall at the end of course

A 71 year old rode 200+ miles from Amherst MA through rain and extreme hills and then raced the bike he rode.
Then there was the 9 year old kid. He dropped his Dad gaining 4+ min on him.
