Anyone think DZ/Garmin will rally for a win?

Is it too much to wonder if Z will try to catch Levi?

I don't think that will happen with DZ. The only surprise left for me would be if Flandis let's it all hang out on Palomar and takes a stage.

I think Astana is too strong to allow anyone to go up the road very far if they have a shot at besting Levi on time. Levi will be on DZ like stink on chit.

As much as I want DZ to win the whole thing, he won't. Astana is too strong, Levi is at a much higher fitness level than Z because this is one of his A races.

that would be surprising seeing as how there's a long list of riders who appear much more fit... almost as surprising as his 8min comeback in le tour..

do you think this is not an A race for Z?? i thought it was... JV was just talking about how they did everything they could to get Z strong enough to win the solvang TT. i dont think Z would be 2nd place in this big of a race if he was just warming up! lol

No, Levi is the only top guy who really cares about ToC. DZ and Garmin want a good showing because the race gets a lot of coverage in the US, but they have bigger and better things to worry about coming up soon, just like the rest of Astana does (notice that Contador isn't here...)

EXACTLY!! I would love to have to be glued to the coverage for fear that I'll miss something tomorrow.

I don't think that DZ can outride Levi over Palomar unless something is amiss like Levi gets sick and the whole Astana team gets sick. Then again if anyone does beat Levi, I hope it is Zabriskie.

Levi on form, in the mtns., closing out third ToC in a row********** Um, no DZ in my crystal ball.

DZ needs some sort of miracle run up Palomar and then Cole Grade that would be on the order of CitiBank and BOA miraculously declaring themselves solvent and their stock skyrocketing off the floor.

It's definitely not an A race for Z. First, of course JV is going to talk a big game - you don't thank your sponsors and the exposure you get in a race like the AToC by badmouthing the race - and second, they no doubt did everything they could to get Z fast enough to win the TT without disrupting his training schedule. Levi is the only guy who brings his A game to California, and it gets him a drama-free win, especially this year; aside from that attack on Stage 2 and the Solvang TT, he's barely had to do anything all week.

And no, DZ and Garmin aren't going to beat Levi, and probably won't make a serious effort to do so, either. Their options are essentially nil, so they'll ride it in for a place on the podium. No doubt though, if Z can keep the rubber side down this spring, he'll do some impressive things. He's becoming a better and better rider every year.
