Substructure, what happened?

Heal up, sounds like it could have been much worse.
I saw a spill today where it took 3 neutral laps before they could even get the injured rider off the course -- multiple broken bones it appears. As a sign of good will towards him, the rest of the field raced for points only and decided to donate the Cat3 purse to him.
It's nice to see that that spirit is alive and well here too.

Hey Sub- sorry to hear about the bad luck, glad that it wasn't any worse. Heal up fast and hopefully you'll be able to get back out again very soon. You've worked too hard and fought through too much to be beaten now!

Well, all according to bike and parts, I'll be on the trainer Tuesday. I'm just going to give it one more day. Heck, I didn't even go for the Vicodin they prescribed me. F that. That stuff is addictive. The pain makes me feel more human. Plus a couple of Tylenol can push it away for a bit.
I already have the week planned for next Saturday. AND if I can switch out my race for the Masters race, I'm going to. I'm going to talk to my team manager tomorrow about everything. The race yesterday just seemed sketchy. A lot of younger guys out there with a 'No Fear' attitude. I need to think of my family and job a little more.
Most importantly however, you guys are awesome. Really awesome. I can't express my gratitude enough to you guys.
Last night my teammate was with me the whole time. He was better than any friend I've had. He stayed with me and helped me with my phone calls, getting bloody clothes off, carrying my stuff, getting my bike, taking care of a lot. I'll never forget how great he was. We didn't get home until after 9. And he didn't complain one time.

Glad to hear you're okay Sub, I had an accident in September which could/should have been very harmful, I walked away uninjured. When I saw my bike, it was totaled, I laughed first, then I cried-tears of joy-I was so fortunate to be okay. I thank God for it.

Last lap. Attack after attack I was up front and someone went left to right, clipped my front wheel at about 35mph. I went down hard - real hard. Then bike after bike hit me in the back. The first bike that hit me broke into three pieces. No joke. The down tube shattered off the bike and the forks crumpled. Then I think 10 bike ran into me. I had guys and bikes all over me. It was a nightmare. I couldn't breathe or move. They forced me into an ambulance because they thought I broke some ribs and my lung collapsed. My back took at least three or four bikes at full speed. My helmet is scraped and there are sprocket teeth marks on the top. I also have marks on my forehead from someone's cranks. My jersey, shoe covers, leg warmers, undershirt, bibs, gloves, and helmet are totaled.
It was ugly. I'm scraped and bruised and sore. But no broken bones. But that poor kid's bike. I can't believe how smashed it was. My back took the brunt of everything.
The bad thing is, my bike is mangles and I have nothing else right now. My wife is out of work and I've paid for several races that I may not be able to do. I'm pretty torn up right now physically, mentally, and spiritually. Seems I can't stand before I get knocked down again. Sux.

I saw you before the race and I was going to say hello, but I didn't. I guess it would suck to ask "are you substructure" to the wrong guy.
Hope you heal quickly!

Get well soon man!
If it makes you feel any better, I kissed the pavement today too, but not nearly enough to require EMS (well...I cared for myself...but I didn't fill out any paperwork ).
See you at the races.

Caring for wounds
Sorry to hear about your crash. You've probably received good guidance on treating wounds. If not, I followed much of the advice below and healed up very nicely after tearing apart my bike, legs, and arms last September.
It takes greater effort to care for wounds this way, but they heal much better with less chance of scarring. Also, by keeping the wounds "moist," you can start riding much sooner. It's OK if the wounds have already scabbed- just take a shower (do not scrub the scabs off) and while the wounds are still wet from the shower, apply a liberal amount of antibiotic ointment and then bandages. The rest will take care of itself.

A couple other tips: If you can't get sulfadiazine or a zinc antibiotic, just use a triple antibiotic from the drug store.
Tegaderm is great. These can be used instead of gauze, as soon as the wounds stop most of their weeping. It can be found at CVS and Rite-Aid. Its an effective way to care or the wounds... but more expensive then conventional bandages.
Good luck... and remember, there's no such thing as too much antibiotic ointment... I went through tube after tube.
(( Like I said, you probably have an effective method for treating your wounds... and they might not require all the attention in the above text and article... but, you can always file it away in case you ever really need it ))

I just saw this thread. I'm glad the accident wasn't worse, and that you seem to be doing well - all things considered. All of this adversity hasn't killed you, so it must be making you stronger. To paraphrase someone who posts here occasionally, the local bike weenies ought to be pretty freakin' scared, and rue the day you return to the peloton! Heal up quickly, and keep us posted.

You must have been racing in Lake Mary. I heard it was a gong show..
Tell me, was it the Bents Cycling ("Ballwatch") kids again? They've been reckless in every cat3 race I've seen them in this season.

I (thankfully) was in the 4's and saw the carnage that was the 5's, the 3's and the P/1/2's. It was a bad day for everyone but us. Yesterday, even with the 35mph winds, was a much safer day.

What race were you in? There was a huge crash in the cat 5 35+ involving over 10 riders on the last lap. I heard there were two definite broken collar bones and perhaps some other broken bones. I was in the cat 5 -35. No crashes in my race but several close calls. I was happy to finish 11th for my first race ever.

Early season races are great, aren't they.
