Pre-cancer, Lance raced to win. I remember Sean Yates going 60kph to get LA onto the Cipressa first.
Post-cancer, Lance uses MSR for 7 hours of nervous pack riding and 1 hour of motorpacing at the end.
It's not about the miles per se, it's about those miles at speed in an amped peloton.

My non-riding friends have no idea that cycling exists outside of the Tour de France (or most recently ToC and ToMO).

You're probably spot on concerning Lance's motivation for riding MSR, but I'm more excited because Lance riding MSR will bring even more visibility to the meat and potatoes of cycling; one-day races.

Hey, beggar's can't be choosers.
I'll admit I'm minutely let-down that Lance isn't racing any of the Classics (in the traditional sense of the term, which requires that the race be in Belgium), but MSR is better than nothin'.

less ye forget, "10 minutes 41 seconds at the bottom, 35 seconds at the top"-Phil Ligget.
yeah, he did come in second but did he not beat ALL of wien's previous best after 4 years off and did you see how fat he was than compared to the ToC? common folk and folkettes, you may not want to believe it or rather i guess i'm the only one whom can see through it all but no one takes Lance, not unless he decides it's okay.

Not planning on catting up anytime soon, so don't wait for me. I wouldn't want to be the cause of "******ining" your demonstration.

i could further irritate the subject and run mental circles around the both of you all day long, even if you two had babies and clanned yourselves in white sheets screaming about nothing but out of respect for gary and this site which i quite thouroughly enjoy the most part of, i won't and you're welcome.
btw, name calling is never appropriate. now it's goodbye.

The five monuments, plus La Fleche, Paris-Brussels, and Paris-Tour.
Calling anything else a classic, or a "minor classic" or a "semi-classic" ignores the original intent, which came from the Challenge Desgrange Colombo which was sort of a precurser to the Super Prestige Pernod trophy.
Just passing on a little history.
