raced lookout HC TT last saturday.
reminded me of the value of early spring training races.
by midweek i knew that my look cleats were terribly worn out and i had a two race weekend planned, so i dropped by the shop on friday to get some new cleats.
ive never really liked Looks, and on the spur of the moment, i decided that rather than buy more cleats for a crappy system, i was gonna finally make the switch to speedplays. which would make lookout my first RIDE, let alone race, on mew pedals. not ideal, but didnt strike me as a huge deal.
my buddys trail hitch rack some how pulled on my FD cable and stretched it out and i couldnt shift into my big ring. being that this was a 20 minute preseason hill climb i hadnt brought my tool kit, and since the route is basically all up hill i figured i'd just small ring it, no biggie.
so of course my start botched a little, took me a few revs to get into the speedplays, and even though i liked the feel, i immediately started feeling the twinge of low back pain i'd been feeling last fall before i lowered my saddle a bit. only after the race did it occur to me (more accurately, someone pointed out) that speedplays have a SIGNIFICANTLY lower stack height than looks.
also the last of a big ring really hurt me in a couple of flatter sections.
anyway i finished 7th, ahead of a teammate ive been sparring with for a few seasons, and was happy with my pacing. i fixed my saddle (down almost 1cm) for the long ride home from golden and felt great the rest of the way and 4 days later i cant believe it took me so long to switch to speedplay.

Is anyone aware of an organization (preferably of and for cyclists) where donation accounts can be quickly established, so that those so inclined can help offset the financial trauma that so often goes along with the physical? Giving can be healing for both the giver and the recipient, and the quicker it is made possible, the better.
negligent.

Several clubs in the area are working together to put up a memorial for Markus at the race site. The memorial will involve a couple of benches and some landscaping situated in a perfect spot to sit and watch the finish of the races. There are many very generous business owners in the clubs who are donating time, expertise, and materials for the memorial, but there will still be some expenses, including those incurred by Markus's family flying in from Germany. There is a donation site running through BikeReg (link below) if you would like to donate; BikeReg is waiving its fees for this. It has become a cliché to note that it takes a tragedy to show our common humanity, but in this case it definitely is true: many people--and CDR heads this list--have come forward to help, and their actions are an inspiring tribute to our fallen friend and fellow cyclist.
Go here to donate through BikeReg.

Cocky bastard.

We gotta race 'em one day at a time. I'm just happy to be here and hope I can help the team. I just want to give it my best shot and, Good Lord willing, things'll work out.
