Al foil will black out your room and doesn't require nails. You could even pin it to the insides of your current curtains if you don't want the ugly exterior look.

What boots are you using? A couple of years ago my beloved Norwegian welt boots that I owned since the 1970's finally rotted so badly that they could not be salvaged. I'm too old to get on Limmer's waiting list for a custom built pair. (Limmer boots are to hiking as Richard Sachs or Vanillia is to custom bike frames, BTW.) The hiking boots I now own I would only trust for day hiking or weekend backpacking.
the girl, and the others we're going hiking with, did the first bit in Georgia last year...which is why we're picking it up in NC. We're doing somewhere around 50 miles...my boots-

Or potential serial killer.

It would certainly discourage sleepovers- "why does your bedroom look like a dungeon?"

I gave up on boots a long time ago unless there's snow on the ground.

I couldnt imagine hiking without serious ankle support...my ankles were injured too many times racing m/c's (and once last year when I fell off my bike). Theyre skinny and fragile.

I really wanted to get a pair just like that, and I may yet. But I need to err on the side of caution with the ankles...

Ive worn my new Vasque GTX's on a handful of day-hikes and was surprised how comfortable they are.

I am the same way, and I have the same boots as you. I wear them on day hikes when all I'm carrying is a little water and a camera. I have sprained my left ankle while standing still.

they were just heavy duty backpacking boots. I had some la sportiva makalu's for crampons back in the day. I may end up wtih some plastic boots over the next couple of years for north country adventures.

My inversion table gives me a headache and makes me nauseous so far, but it does seem to help my back a bit, or at lease enough to be a decent placebo.

Hikers, I have some Garmont Dakotas that are fairly lightly used. Size 11. They're about 6 years old but a size too small so I haven't warn them much at all. I'd part with them for shipping costs.

With a lot to carry or in really rough terrain I like a boot with a stiff sole. For day hiking when the footing isn't too extreme I like a very light shoe that is barely a boot. You have to have more than one pair of foot ware, just like you need more than one pair of wheels.

Added in edit:

And this is what I wear now:
