per McEwen's twitter - Had an accident today in tour of Belgium, broke my tibia. Operation, two screws in it.luckily the tendon is ok. Hit a barrier.

according to sporza, he hit a bollard, and tore ligaments below the knee (i believe it was an open wound).
it wasn't looking good when he couldn't clip out of his pedal.

Why on earth would that Race Official attempt to twist Robbie's foot to try and unclip this cleat?? Wouldn't it have been easier/wiser to simply unstrap his shoe and try and slip the foot out?

Why did I just now choose to go back and watch the video after reading this post (while I was eating breakfast)...was that bone sticking out?

I'm pretty sure it was meat. For a compound fracture i'd expect a lot more blood.
