For future searchers on this thread - I'm also involved in the collegiate cycling scene by supporting the GW Cycling Team (George Washington University) that rides from the Foggy Bottom area. If you've got questions about that squad, lemme know. Most active racing members of the GW Cycling team are also on a USAC squad in the city. From what I can think of immediately, we've had folks ride for NCVC, R1V, and Bike Rack (not to mention Colavita-Bolla and the National U-23 team, too!).

the active contributors (bdcheung & rudesiggy) to the original thread are no longer active. I need advice regarding my options.
I'm a cat-4 with three upgrade points. Prefer hard single day races and criteriums.
I will know next to no one in the DC area, so i'd prefer a smaller team where I get to know people.
Suggestions?

That is a rich area for racing. If you know herbie53 from the other place, he races for ABRT. MDCatV also races in that area.

I went with NCVC, but they are the opposite of small. Over 300 members, but really the active road racers are a smaller subset of that.
There are tons of options, but the "DC area" is huge and traffic sucks so it is hard to make a good recommendation without knowing what part of town you are going to live. I would start here https://www.mabra.org/index.html they have a club list, and you can look through the results a bit to try and get a feel for club size, activity, priority, etc.

I'll be living in Pentagon City/Crystal City and working out of Alexandria. And yes, commuting to a team ride is not how i want to spend my time unless there's really good reason for it.

Being in Arlington/CC that puts you pretty close to all the DC teams as well as the Arlington squads. District Velocity, Squadra Coppi, NCVC, Artemis are all teams that are very active in the area.
First I would sign up to the MABRA listserv, most teams announce their sponsored rides and races there. Then I would just start to show up to the popular DC group rides and talk to people on the various teams.
Freshbikes Tuesday ride (April-October) is one of the biggest, once a month they have free Baja Fresh tacos and beer.
Saturday mornings at East/West Highway and Beach Drive is another huge ride. They have a 7am and 10am group.
Thursdays at Hains Point for sprint practice. well really everyday at noon there is a group that does loops at Hains, but on Thursdays there is a big group in the evenings too.
By the way, i are you the same echappist from ST?

Go to the nearest quality shop. Find out what rides leave from there. Talk to people on that ride.

Yes, but it sometimes goes the way of quantity over quality.
(though coming from Bikeforums, your quality demands can't be too high - regardless, keep away from the 'trail etiquette' thread)
Always a good place to track down or sell off used gear though.
