Got yelled at.
Second turn, last lap Morroco Shrine Training crit. I'm 4th wheel, the first two guys are planning an attack. Both accelerate out of the turn, and second guy puroposely slows to launch the first. The third guy and I both see it coming and are accelerating through the turn. He goes wide, barely staying on the pavement.
I'm following his line, just to the outside of his wheel. I realize that I need to tighten my line, or go in the grass. I start to tighten my line, but I'm already pedaling, and I can't without bashing a pedal, so I go in the grass. I get out of the saddle accelerate up the grass for about 100 feet. At this point the course is 2 lanes wide and straight. I move back on the course, losing about 7-8 positions, and chase back up to finish 7th.
After the race, a guy is pissed at me for coming back on the course. I honestly don't know if I cut anyone off, but I do know at the time, no one slammed on breaks, had to swerve, yelled etc.
Admittedly, I should not have blindly followed a line that put me in this predictament.
His claim was that it was unsafe for me to come back on the course going 5mph slower. My point was 1) I wasn't 5mph slower or I couldn't have been moving back up, 2) I was in front of him, and he was obligated to avoid me, and 3) the course was 2 open lanes wide, with plenty of room to go around me.
So, should I have just coasted to a stop in the grass and rolled in at the back, or got back in and contested the finish?

Whenever I see a guy go off the course, I've come to expect ANYTHING. There's not a rule either in print or implied that says what you should do here. It's dangerous, but that's bike racing.
And since that returning rider is in front of you, you have to yield to him.
No foul.

If you haven't been yelled at don't go to Europe.
Seriously hasn't everyone been yelled at, rightly or wrongly, at least once?

I wasn't too far behind you and there was no problem in the cheap seats. I think that gets chalked up to "That's racin'".

I should have stuck around for all the excitement! It was good to see another BF poster.
I almost had my front wheel taken out in lap 2 by a strange line change by somebody in that weird series of corners on the east side of the course. Not only did I lose a lot of position, I also lost my nerve for a little bit. (Crits just ain't my thing, but I'm trying.) By the time I got it back it was a pretty big gap that shrank for a couple of laps as I was burning match after match, mostly on the backstretch into the wind. Eventually my book of matches ran out. Somewhere just shy of 20 minutes in I saw the pack gaining on me so I went off course and slotted in about 50 feet behind and stayed there for a number of laps before calling it a "workout". I think that it was 2 to go when I left for Gainesville.

Hi merlinextraligh,
Sounds OK to me as long as you didn't make a big move into the middle of the road.
Twice on Sunday, in a Masters 40+ crit, there were guys coming back into the field after punctures (free lap). On separate occasions, each of them were on the outside of a very wide road and came slashing into the middle of the field. They were going 5+ MPH slower than the field.
The second guy made his move just in front of me and I swerved further left to get around him and yelled at him as I went by. No one yelled at me for swerving so either I was OK or those behind were also busy moving around the bozo.

Well done. I too would have said "nice job". It happens...you probably just scared the bejeezus out of the guy and he was venting...probably never had it happen around him...don't worry about it.
I've been pushed off the course, as most long time racers have, and have ridden on grass, through some trees once, and bunny hopped curbs onto sidewalk and back on the course again...not a big deal...you just respond to stay on the bike and going forward lol.
Your action was a lot better than crashing or taking someone out...well done...chapeau

Yeah, when you go into the grass, you're supposed to kick up rainbows and unicorns. Fark him.
This weekend, in two crazy p12 crits with 90 racers each, I didn't hear anyone yell. Plenty of wheel chopping (diving for a wheel that's momentarily "available") and gapping, but people stayed focused on the racing. Somebody pulled in front of me? Hmm, I guess that's what these here handle bars and headset are for.

Some jerkwad rides you off the road and then expects you to softpedal back onto the end of the train? Please.

I had a teammate a couple of years ago who won a RR by advancing up the shoulder. It was a steep uphill finish and he started into the hill midpack - not where he wanted to be. So he jumped off the road, sprinted like mad to the front of the group, jumped back on the road and won the race. My point? Off road does not mean you're out of the race. Keep racing.

Last weekend I flagged a corner for a highly-technical crit. The 5s, 4s and 3s yelled a lot. The masters, not so much. The Pro/1/2 were silent, serious and focused. Watching them was like watching a waterfall -- each lap was different but structured; they held their lines, they did what they needed to do without compromising life and limb.
I aspire to ride like that.

I really didn't think I did anything wrong, other than running off the road in the first place.
But I felt kinda bad pissing off somebody that I'm going to be riding with and racing against regularly.
