The first words from the linked cyclingnews story:

Cadel Evans was close to tears as he sat on the steps of the BMC team bus and tried to explain...

Really? Cadel close to tears? I find that difficult to believe. [insert appropriate smiley]

Now I'm close to tears because he just ruined my 33 TdF thread final top 10 lottery submission.

he was more than close with his teammate just after the finish. I feel for the guy, but still. He's wearing the rainbow jersey, he wore the yellow jersey, there are worse things.

How much did Garmin get out of the Wiggins buy out? I hope JV takes the boys out for a nice dinner on what ever he got, cause Garmin definitely were the winners of that deal.

When you've poured everything you can into a race and your body just won't respond, it's pretty draining. These guys are playing on the biggest stage in the world under a huge amount of pressure, both internal and external to perform. After 5 days at Gila losing the podium spot was totally depressing for a while. I can only imagine how Cadel felt when he got off the bike.

Seeing him weep in his teammates arms was enough to get me to turn the TV off. There are no words...

True enough. I've tasted some big defeats, but nothing like that. He'll look back later and be proud of what he's done, but at the moment it's hard to see it.

i dont find things like that hard to watch, i find them endearing. i was not much of a cadel evans fan prior to 2009, but since he put on the rainbow stripes, he's obviously poured himself into his craft and worn the wc jersey with dignity. at the moment, i cant think of a prof. athlete i admire more.

I won't go quite that far, but I do have to admit that Cadel has risen mightily in my esteem since earning the Rainbow Jersey. (Not that it matters to him, of course.)

On Sunday's team ride and last night at our monthly team meeting one topic of conversation was how long could Evans last seeing that he has been in very good form all Spring and up through the first week of the TdF. Pretty much everybody thought that he would crack soon because he had been "out on the razor" for so long.

It was interesting that nobody picked him in our pool. The winner of the pool gets a Festina watch once owned by Raul Alcala that one of our team sponsors owns and put up as a prize. I'm hoping that Andy S wins by more than a minute and 30 seconds. I decided to go conta-Contador as that would probably be the most popular pick, but two guys picked AS with a slim victory and I have to ace those guys out.

if one were to just listen to his "analysis" of the TdF, no one would believe bob roll was actually a professional cyclist.

But he is a professional Lance shill and I'm sure that it pays a whole lot better than his pro riding ever did.

Personally I believe that he is a whole lot smarter about what is going on than he can reveal on VS.

Yeah I doubt that Versus would really like it if he told the truth about the racing scene when he was riding or what he knows about a certain RS rider. I'm sure he and Paul could tell some pretty interesting stories about doping in the peloton...many of them first hand. Bob's got a shtick and he plays it up to the delight of some and the annoyance of others.

I agree that he's working within certain commercially imposed realities.

Even so, in past years, I've found him to be more insightful, at least compared to Phil and Paul. This year, though, even less.

"For the guys who have supported me and been so good, the team and Andy Rihs, the owner of the team and everyone who has believed in this project, I'm just so sorry to let them all down."

Chapeau Cadel.

^ I'm not sure if Cadel has really changed, or if he just has become better able to express himself, so you see the likeable qualities, but I definitely am getting a better impression of him.

I don't know if that's necessarily true. I know a lot of guys who are strong as hell but simply have no idea what's going on in a race. But, really, that's ok because (if they're on your team) you give them instructions and they go off and do what they're told. It's possible Roll was a guy like that. He got the OLN gig because of his personality not necessarily because he was a brilliant tactician.

He got on Versus because of his relationship with LA. Same with Carmichael, he used to do those pieces about Lances training cause he's Lance's "coach". He's about as much Lances coach as I am but he is part of the inner circle and that's what matters.

I'm in now way a fan of the broadcast crew that Versus hands us but I'm happy to get the coverage. I feel like I'm informed well enough to sift through the mistakes and missinformation. I do hate that the newbies and 99'ers think what comes out of their mouths is gospel.

Bob Roll definitely wasn't made for TV. None of the VS crew are exactly lookers, but man.

Really though, it's hard to sound intelligent for 6 hours straight when you aren't allowed to stop talking and the only footage you have is given to you by the tour without any cues or warning. I certainly don't envy their job.

I guess I am spoiled listening to Sean Kelly. He makes mistakes too though. I think this thing that they do is harder than we think it is.
