Well on a slightly related note my sponsor wants to relocate our proposed race to an outdoor mall. He wants more exposure. I want a quality, safe, inexpensive course. Ah well.

There is a big distinction to be made between the cycling culture and tri/running cultures. A lot of cyclists race 20x a summer. A similarly dedicated triathlete might do 4 races....three short triathlons at $100 each then an IM for $550. Dedicated runners would fall somewhere between. At the end of the summer we've all spent $500-$1000 for our races. IMHO, cycling offers the most bang for the buck.
I can't imagine a road race charging $75 unless they have something special to offer...large purse for my cat....closed course...long standing high demand. Otherwise, there are too many other good races willing to charge $30 for me to bite on the expensive one.

LOTOJA costs $169 to race, which I am willing to pay. Of course, it is 205 miles and cross through three different states, so a lot of that expense is understandable.

A triathlon and a marathon are completely different animals. TOTAL road closures for 8 hours. And you're only doing one or two of them per year.
Road races are rolling enclosures and you're doing two or three per month. For $75 per rider, I expect the production value to be on par with the Amgen Tour. (only slight exaggeration). Expo? Food? Beer? Giveaways? Neutral Support? A decent announcer? Accurate and timely results? Great organization? On time? Safe?
I don't mind if a promoter makes money on the event. It's a lot of work.

(FYI I know HB in real too) I'd respectfully disagree with the budget number. Although I haven't done Bkill and don't know the promoter, I'd guess that the expenses would be closer to the $150k mark. For example, I know that the police costs for a now-defunct crit in CT was about $25k. Originally it was waived to promote tourism but recently the municipality decided they wanted the money. I don't know the extent of road closures etc at Bkill.
I also don't know what kind of sponsorship etc he has, but I'm guessing he has some more money for both income and expenses. I'd apply the "prize money is 10% of budget" rule to this race, so I'd guess $300k budget to run it. A big-race promoter goes by that rule, generally/broadly speaking.
Does the Bkill guy have a job outside of promoting?

He posted his expenses on a blog retort somewhere. I don't remember the details but my recollection is that I wasn't blown away by the profit. IMO he's entitled to whatever profit he makes. It's not a charity, and he's the one incurring the risk. Anyone that thinks he's making easy money (I know you're not suggesting that CDR) should put on an event and set your own rate.

I would prefer the promoter makes money; even better, makes a living off of it. Then he/she has a vested interest in consistently delivering a quality product, it's his livelyhood. Pleasing his customers (racers) would be his primary objective.

here is my report.
I live/race in WI/MN. I did a race in PA last year and it was cheaper, longer, bigger payouts, and on the freaking nascar track in Pocono. it was a mothers day race, 35 degrees and there were lots of people. Talent was harder than expected. Also one of the refs was an international comissuer if that means anything.

FWIW, in WA, I typically spend 20-30$ for a crit/single day RR. 10-15$ for the weekday crit series that are not sanctioned, and 70-90$ for weekend stage races that would include CC, Crit, and TT.
Our sponsored race:
Payouts for 10k across all fields (1/2, 3, 4, 5, masters, 1/2W, 3W, 4W) not including a bunch of primes of schwag and cash
Having to help out with the race I know that pretty much everyone involved (promoter, the team coffer, etc) does well, but is not making off like Goldman Sachs.
$75 for a single day RR better have a big bag of free stuff, baked potato bar, and rubdowns afterwards.

I think we charged $75 for our omnium last year, that's a RR, TT and a crit. $75 for one race is ridiculous. It's not that hard to put on a RR in SW Virginia where I live because it's out in the sticks. The hard part is getting people to show up. But after they saw the course last year I think plenty more will show up. At least the ones who want real mountains in a road race. The price this year will probably go up as we are looking into getting police involved. Our entire omnium was under $15k last year.
