How / why / when did or do you pick up sponsors

Just curious for my future self (plan on trying to do a race season next year). How did you guys acquire your sponsorships. Were you hunted at races, or did you wright to companies??

i don't know any amateur cyclists who have individual sponsorships. my college team has a few; rudy project, park tool, defeet...we reached out to them. they sponsor a bunch of teams and were happy to help.

i know a few triathletes who have individual sponsorships, but again, haven't really seen it with cyclists.

Hah thanks. My lbs doesn't do any racing series'. Talked to them the other day about it. And have read that thread, found a lot of things quite useful. Couldn't find anything about sponsors so - /thread. But I'll look around the area, I'm sure some do.

Yes, but that doesn't address the how, why and when the OP was looking for. I think Match.com or eHarmory might be a good place to start.

My employer sponsors me via my paycheck, and I get to race for free when I finish in the money.

gsteinb 04-27-12 06:51 PM

I met my wife on facebook. the why is pretty simple. When...well I was already racing for 20 years.

OP, use the search function. I know there was a pretty good thread about this a year or two ago.

As a side note, If you haven't already won your first 3 or 5 Cat5 races (or whatever it is you need to upgrade) and then didn't already dominate Cat 4 and haven't already moved up to Cat 3 with a few podium finishes...I'd start there...

God bless search. Forgot to use it haha. There's not very big race series' close to me (closest ones are 2 hours away). But I'm seriously looking into trying crits and rr's. I'm off to find that other thread now hah :) graciās

That counts as close. 3-5 hours is not uncommon for me to travel for a race, and I'm still a lousy cat5. Anything under 1.5 hours is awesome and practically local.
