If I upgrade to 2 the only races I can do are the short-duration (cccx, foothill, crits (where I'd be murdered)) or fixed length courses like Hamilton. My hotfoot is really unbearable after 3+ hours. I'm torn.

Impossible to diagnose over a computer, but the 'tap test' is your best bet. Use the blunt end of a screwdriver (with a hard plastic handle) and tap up and down the tube. If the sound changes noticeably when you get to the suspect area, then you've got a crack. If it doesn't, then you're *probably* OK. It's really hard to know for sure without an x-ray and at that point, dollar-wise, you're better off sending if off to be fixed.

bored at work, dreaming of some electronic shifting for next season. I'll have to convince the wife. Maybe for Christmas I can get some cheap race wheels and someone's old Ultegra Di2 10 speed when they upgrade to 11.

I've got some chips in my frame from recent melees and this is my plan. (did do a basic tap test, a-ok there)

Making a kilometer blurry
I wouldn't risk as much on a fork or bars, but chain stay is not as much of an instant hospital visit. I'd just make a calendar reminder to do the tap test every month to see if it's changing. I'm doing this with a chip I recently discovered under the top tube of one of my SSTs (you were probably being too rough).

There's a reason why most pro cockpits are aluminum (i.e. bars, stem)

yes. lefty loosey.
sounds like galling or corrosion. put some penetrating oil in it and try heat-cold before forcing it any more.

PB Blaster will loosen anything. Should have started out with some anti-seize when it was put on.

Did this with a 39/28. Can't imagine anything longer or steeper with that gearing.....would have died.

I did a sustained 1 mile climb at 13% a few weeks ago. And it was absolutely brutal with a 39/28. Like just to maintain staying upright I was doing 300w+ and pegging my HR from using my entire body.

I contest that it's the hardest hill in SF, just due to it's length. There are steeper climbs, but they are only a block or so.
