That is absolutely true. Nobody ever learned how to be a carpenter until they had something they wanted to build. Same goes for programming.

1. Am I more likely to get my track upgrade if I put carbon Ultegra pedals on my track bike instead of alloy Ultegra?
2. Should I ride clinchers, as I hear they are safer than my tubulars? To go faster, should I put said clinchers at 140psi or 145psi?
3. 50x15 or 53x16 or 47x14?
4. Should I attack from the rail, or the infield?

the annoyances of having too much thinking time all day until racing.

Answers: 1. Alloy, 2. 140, 3. trick question - 48x14, 4. trick question - from the rider's meeting.

Since I'm not on FB or Strava I don't really hear anything. I'll find out some at the Oakland crit next weekend at least..

And at least I have other options from people that have recently asked but I've turned down.

Btw does Rubio's sponsor a team?? I'd go with them.

It's been a frustrating day at work. I have been roped in to managing a larger in person/online meeting. It would be fine - just boring - except for one guy who keeps second guessing everything I do.

It shouldn't bother me, but it's part of a larger trend I've noticed at my office. I work at a university based research center. Only a handful of people here have PhDs and about a quarter have masters degrees. The rest have bachelors degrees. But because I am a marketing and communication guy, it is assumed by many of the researchers that I am incapable of understanding research or assisting with it, even though I have my masters degree and when I took the job, I was a finalist for a PhD program at this university. Also, my wife is a PhD and university professor, and I have served as the main editor and sometimes collaborator on her research papers.

Also, the difference between 10 percent and 25 percent is 15 percentage points, not 15 percent.

So I've already commented on how my job/office environment is the suck, but today is kind of topping it off for me.

Well, I'm finally starting to move into the position that they've been yoyo'ing in front of me and I keep trying to stand up/volunteer for, after like 6 months, when we are getting slammed and I'll have to self train myself in the position. I've had a PTO day requested for over a month for this coming Monday. It's the last day my girlfriend is in the states before going to study abroad in England. An install came up at work that started today. We have restricted remote access that people on their end have to watch over us, so we only have set times we can work on it...6am to 10am our time because they are overseas. Well today we were unable to finish, which was kind of expected for the install type. The next day they can work (because of different weekends) is on Monday. I realize they need me to finish this process, so I volunteer to my boss that I'll just work remote in the morning from 6to10, because my girlfriend will probably be sleeping anyways, and hopefully finish up the install.

I get an email from the President after going home today that said basically if I want to step up and do this job, then I need to take no vacation and be in the office to do this install. I a) already volunteered to do the work, which my girlfriend will already hate me for because I cant even sleep in with her on her last day b) the work is remote overseas, so there is absolutely no reason to be in the office to do it anyways. If I need help from anyone it'll be someone that doesn't even work in the office, so I'd have to call them anyways.

The office morale is horrible. He watches over us and makes sure we put in 9+ hours a day (set times, no flexibility) or otherwise calls us out. We can't even go see a doctor without taking a PTO day, which is only if he approves it. There is zero work from home policy, and our office is in midtown atlanta (which means some people have to commute 2+hours a day, no matter what, 5 days a week).

Does anyone else think this is a complete joke or am I overreacting by considering quitting/turning in my notice?

Your post reminds me of the time that I was working as an on-site person for a big investment bank (we supplied them with middleware). The guy that I interacted with had a reasonably sized staff. At one point, just before he got moved/fired/something, he required all his staff to give him written updates every 15 minutes.

Once he asked me if a particular process was running. We never had such a process. He showed me the error. I pointed out that his script called the wrong process. I think it took him about 5 minutes before he realized that he'd misspelled the process (which I told him he did - "We don't have a process named XYY but we do have XYZ - is that what you're trying to call?").

It was after he yelled at me on the open floor (former trading floor so maybe 100-150 desks within visual and hearing range) that one of his staff told me about his inane requirements.

As far as your job goes... I worked something similar to that. Got up at Easter dinner in Sturbridge MA where we got 4 groups of people together (Missus/me, Missus's mom/stepdad, Missus's step-brother/wife, Missus's step-sister/husband/kid). We drove 2+ hours to get there. We'd just gotten our food when the office called with a critical support issue. I got up with the Missus, she drove while I was on the phone, used up two batteries plus my own phone, then logged in when we got home. I got reprimanded for not having more batteries and a car charger (it was the first time I had such a long drive while on the phone so it never occurred to me).

When I got laid off (the investment bank, literally 95+% of the gross income and the reason I got hired, ended their contract after 30 years) the Missus asked me where I wanted to go celebrate.

The reason why I stayed for the almost five years was the money. It got me a lot of stuff and I'm living off of it now. Was it worth it? I suppose so. I wouldn't have been able to be at home for a year plus with Junior without the money from that job, I wouldn't have been able to do all the stuff to my old house, I wouldn't have had my fun car. But at the same time the Missus doesn't want me to go to another job like that, even for that money. It absolutely destroyed our quality of life.

So we're vetting VP candidates, and I need your help. Of the four major factors in selecting a candidate to vote for, which would you rank as most important?

Hair amount

Hair style

Hair color

Being able to see China from your upstairs bathroom.

Rememeberer, vote Hookers and Sandwiches!

Creatre, there are bad managers everywhere. Good IT people are in short supply. It's a seller's market. Take a look around.

Regarding self-taught programmers. I am looking for two software developers and get more than a few candidates that are qualified but lack formal education in the core subjects. The common thread is a lack of depth. They know how to do many things well but they don't know how to do a certain thing many ways. Fine for hobbyists but not my preferred choice in a busy corporate environment where I am trying to build a team environment.

Watch this, because you're having difficulty telling the two apart:

My buddy helped build a guy's business up from the ground floor. The guy was a bit of a dick. As the business grew the guy became more of a dick. My friend got fired a few months ago so the (insert giant penis here) could hire his brother. His brother embezzled 6 figures, which proves that karma exists, but in the end, a dick is a dick.

Thinking that somehow you'll be appreciated and rewarded by the people in charge there is like thinking that the girlfriend who slept with your best friend, your Dad, and the local NBA team is going to now be faithful. It could happen.

But FYI if you're going to step up, step up. And if you have someone's nutsack in your hand realize it and squeeze. Then watch your back like a hawk.

If I'm Senior Dick in charge of dickness, I might see a guy who I don't think much of who keeps pestering me to to a job, which I finally give him, then doesn't get it done, then wants to work from home.

Two sides of that coin.

FWIW I wish you well.

Interesting ride tonight. I've run into many irate and irrational motorists, but this one takes the cake... Dude opened up his vest and gestured inside while asking if I wanted to meet his blade...

I'm assuming he was talking about a knife

Some days i really do believe the gene pool requires more thinning...

I went to my first team board meeting this week. Decisions on next season's kit design, boring administrative stuff, mostly it was a preview of the silly season gossip.

sorry to hear that. You got your work experience and can probably leverage that into a position elsewhere, though given what you said, i won't be surprised if he goes berserk when you hand in your resignation letter.
