Sorry to hear it. Mine was a spiral fracture, but not completely disconnected. I felt it sticking up into my skin, and pushed it back down. Then I tightened my commuting pack strap to hold it in place, and rode the rest of the way to work. Called my wife for a ride and changed clothes for the ER visit, and she ran some errands while I was in there. No surgery, and the Dr. thought it was set very nicely.

So, "depends."

Might be too early, but registered for 6 crits at the series next season. Also signed up for a clinic / race next month.

I popped mine 15 months ago, research I did/talking to my doctor what I took away was that surgery isn't always recommended, but the tendency is to perform it more often than in the past b/c it reduces instances of shoulder disfunction later in life. I'm absolutely not a doc, but if the ends weren't still in contact with each other I'd be giving surgery serious consideration. Also, it heals faster.

bro, get the surgery.

mine was 4 pieces with a split chunk in the middle. no surgery = grinding and moving and popping whenever you lay down, sit up, cough, etc. it blows.

I rode 3 days after the crash on the trainer, just spinning. Had surgery, rode 3 days after surgery, on the trainer, just spinning. Was outside on the 10th day post surgery. Stuck to flats for 6 or 8 weeks, slowly built up more and more as the pain was less and less.

No trick to it. Once you get everything plated together it's not likely to move, and it will hurt long before the plate slips or screws break. My first surgeon told me I could do whatever I wanted as long as it didn't hurt. If it hurt, I should stop.

My second surgeon (other clavicle) was more in favor of me not riding for 8 weeks at all, but I am a bad patient and just rode around on the flats.

No bones about it, you're looking at 3-4 months before you're back to full strength, but you'll find once it's surgically reconstructed you'll progress pretty quick to a normal life after 2 weeks.

oh, and the longest lasting impact from my breaks was the immediate 10-15lbs of sorry-for-myself weight I packed on.

I don't recommend that.

I'll defer to the several people who have had those breaks. If you want it I can scan the article Ride magazine did about that subject. PM me.

Sorry to hear that.

I've got Continental ExtremeContact DW (Dry/Wet, they have DWS, dry wet snow all seasons) on my car. Also Max Performance Summer tires with sticky rubber that turns to glass when it gets cold. Needless to say, we took my wife's SUV with the all seasons to Minnesota for Thanksgiving. I haven't had any problems yet, since it hasn't snowed here, and doesn't get SUPER cold.

Super Sports were on my list, but the Contis are substantially cheaper and basically as sticky, plus slightly better (still awful) treadwear.

If anyone is looking for a free credit monitoring site that doesn't actually cost money and does actually work, I'd recommend creditkarma. I'd been looking for something for a long time, and this one is real nice. Just ignore the occasional (non-obtrusive) credit card offers, and you're good to go. Shows you your actual number, which is helpful to monitor, and gives tips for helping it out.

Mine was a clean break so no surgery. Heal up and don't rush back.

Ya, I'm trying to strip the time before surgery from my mind. I couldn't even lay down all the way. 24 hours after surgery and I was only taking tylenol for pain already, and felt so so so much better.
