I'd pay a lot of money if it could take me back to 42, this creeping up on 60 isn't cool. Terrifying, actually.

I hear you. I used to laugh at the AARP mail. Now I'm looking through their literature.

Started a new antibiotic last night. Lungs feel like they are full of gravel and broken glass, but I might go for a short ride later, just to try and feel normal.

A while back I took the mtb out and like a dumbass went through a place known for goat head thorns. It's sitting in the bike room with 2 flats, I could work on that first.

Another option is to down some of the codeine they gave me and have a long nap.

I'm not going to complain if my body thinks it's 63 years younger than it is.

I'm a -20 as well. I needed that today...I just bought my cycling license and race age is 40 for this year! :(

I came out to 35 so my suckiness is not too far behind.

Hope that whatever drugs you need to take help you get better.

flight was cancelled right as we got to the airport today. No direct option until the 9th, but we found a flight to atlanta, then to Pittsburgh tomorrow. I'm pretty bummed, i had a really nice night planned with the girlfriend after two weeks away. Worse things could definitely happen, so it's nothing worth complaining about, just a slight annoyance.

It's $70 instead of $60.

I'm sitting down and hammering out a budget now that I'm a single guy and have to carry it all on my own. Having my oldest with me, paying a small rent, will help. Either I'm missing something (which I don't think is the case), or I suck at math (which I don't think is the case), or we were pissing money away at an alarming rate... This is not going to be that bad...

I won't be going to as many stage race as in the past, but the local racing will be fine and there will be cash for a select few projects as they say...

The number one goal, and promise i have made to my 2 sons, is that we will do Christmas next year in Cuba...

What do you guys think of the fact that the ex-wife doesn't seem to be in a super rush to grab the rest of her stuff from the house? Everything she really needed she has, but she's still got a ton of cycling clothing here and family dishes and heirlooms. Personally I wish she would just come and get it, but I'm not pushing...

carpediemracing 01-04-14 06:25 PM

^ you mention that you and the ex are civil and getting along. That may be reducing the urgency/stress in terms of "I need to get my stuff NOW".

Your mortgage/rent just went up 18%, I doubt you'd be calling it marginal. You think Steve johnson took a pay cut this year?

Having sat on one of the LA boards, and having watched another find the financial books written on napkins whenthe president quit I'm less accepting of an increase like this when there's no financial accountability.

gsteinb 01-05-14 06:19 AM

Yeah, but the trickle down is going to be rough. It's the little guy who picks up the tab. All these folks jumping into cross and mountain bike races now and their coaches having to alter training programs.

carpediemracing 01-05-14 08:38 AM

I told my coach I had to cut my first check to him by $10.

carpediemracing 01-05-14 08:38 AM

Oh wait, I don't have a coach :)

carpediemracing 01-05-14 08:43 AM

I did spend… $150 (club) + 70 (me) the other day. I'll need to spend $60 (officials license) + $350 (permits) + $25 (late fee for permitting less than 8 weeks for the first race). The next week is really crunch time - deadline for numbers, permits (which means flyers), etc. I'd like to have the races on BikeReg by the end of the month, prior to that if possible.

I have a different site to update, flyers (they're actually changing somewhat for 2014 due to extra races for four weeks, and they have to be uploaded to USAC for the permit thing), and to finalize sponsorship (the one sponsor I have).

Of course all this depends on getting a response from the tenant that complained about the race. That's a big thing on the "to do" list on Monday. Couple phone calls, couple emails (including responses to an email from him after he obviously listened to my voicemail and sent me an email)… I hate this drama stuff.

gsteinb 01-05-14 08:44 AM

Mine is less a coach/client relationship and more akin to BDSM

USAC is feeling its monopolist oats. The organizational behavior resulting from being both a monopoly and a non-profit is curious to me.

I've heard that a few dollars from every USAC-licensed race entry, above and beyond pass-through costs, goes to USAC. Presumably this is to support their goals, which include supporting elite racing and the olympics. Should an amateur racer be required to subsidize olympians just to line up on a Saturday? Are any other sports like this?

I'm pretty sure this is standard for US national level organizations that are the formal reps for Olympic sports. When I shot UIT (shooting sports equivalent to the UCI) major events way back when, I believe part of the match fees went to USA Shooting for the same reason. While some Olympians don't need the support - NBA players, for example - many do, especially at the development level. Many national governments subsidize Olympic sports programs, but the USA doesn't. Personally, I don't have a problem with helping those young guys and gals live the dream.

No license for me until my team situation is straightened out. Not sure if the team is registered for 2014 yet. I know that the guy who runs it is a bit behind schedule with all of the organizational stuff. I'm sure it'll be good to go by the time racing season starts.

Looks like we've got a bunch of fellow collarbone breakers this winter. My work situation is such that I've been off since the 18th of December and go back tomorrow. I'm trying to decide if I'll be commuting by bike or taking the T. The recovery process has definitely been protracted, until about a week ago I wouldn't have considered riding outside. Too much activity with my left arm still leaves me with a sore shoulder. I'm also not technically permitted, by my surgeon, to ride a bike, and my pin implant is still in. But I'm also sick of taking the train. Sigh. I usually am a fast healer, so this has been pretty brutal. I almost don't remember what it's like to feel normal on both sides, and I'm coming to the realization that even with the surgery, my body probably isn't going to be quite the same as it was before the break. I'm sure it'll WORK fine, but it looks different and I think my left shoulder is still a bit lower, though that may be a matter of rebuilding those muscles a bit. This is definitely not something I want to do again. Appointment next Friday to check my progress, thank goodness. With any luck I can set a date to get the pin removed. Damn thing is driving me insane.

Rbart, good luck with everything. I'm glad things are going (reasonably) well right now. I hope they continue that way.
