This morning I did a careful inspection of the rim. It looks fine.

So I dug out an older tube today and used it. It has been holding air all day with no problem.

Weird.

I'll ride it tomorrow and see what happens.

Added in edit:

I totally agree with HB about how typically the tire fails to hold and then the tube fails. That is why I am confused.

Aaron - I've had about equally good luck with Contis and Michelins. I've just been able to get better deals on the Michelins. I got about 2500 miles from the rear with the Krylions.

One website is saying snow all day on Sunday, one is saying partly sunny and low 40's. Glad we are all on the same page there

No flatting issues here. They are my training and rain racing tire. I get two seasons out of a set.

Would you guys mind specifying what conti you are using?

I'm in the market for some new "nice" 23c tires for my caad9 (am considering gp4000s). my training bike uses rubinos/rubino pros due to the high mileage, but I want to try something new on my caad9

I really like GP4000s. I run 25c rear and 23c front. I would run 25c for both if my fork had room.

TMonk - Competitive Cyclist has a sale on Conti Grand Prix in 700x23 for $25. Note that these are not the GP4000S, but the original design with the same rubber as the GP4000S. I need one more set of tires for this season, and I might get these, albeit in 700x25. I've got a set of these in 700x28 and I like them.

As an aside, my CAAD9 has lots of room for 700x25s, if you wanted to try that size.

BTW, I'm running GP4000s 25c. Quite comfy and I got about 2500 or so out of my last rear tire.

gp4000-S is the same. they just changed the name. It's all in the "S".

*edit - I might be wrong. dunno. 4000S are solid tires either way.

Correct. I only mentioned it because I don't have any experience with the new tire.

Ha yeah, meant 23's.

I used to run 25's or even 28's back in my fat rando days, but not anymore!!

shovel - Based on habit, experience, logic? (serious question)

Matt - There used to be a non-Black Chili version, the GP4000 with colored sidewalls. Conti has since upgraded them to Black Chili.

I got the Grand Prix 28s for a 105 mile RR that includes about 20 miles of gravel. I've done that race twice with them, plus about 1500 miles of training, but I don't know how they'd work out in a crit. Currently running 25s.

There is never any logic in anything I say here on BF. I spend my waking hours striving to be a sarcastic meme machine like Fudgy. He's my hero.

I chose the GP4000s based on recommendations and firsthand experience. For a while I had no tubulars so I raced on them in all conditions. They never let me down. It is all about trust.

Narrow rims and 23's? I buy a lot of my stuff second hand. Both sets of wheels for example. Two sets of deep carbon wheels and a DA cassette for $1100. DA 7970 group for a grand. I will move to 11 speed wheels and wider rims at the same time, as soon as I start seeing some deals. I just missed an almost new set of Stinger 7's for $900. I figure I will buy the 11 speed wheels first and run them with a spacer for 10 speed and wait for a used 9070 set. Seeing that new 6870 is down around the $1k mark today, it won't be long.
