So, I finally had time to upload some rides and races to garmin connect and training peaks. I have been just uploading to strava for ease of use. I had a nagging feeling that I was training in a lower heart rate zone than I needed to be and I think that is true.
After updating my threashold heart rate from TP and using friels heart zone calculator I have a more definative range but am still somewhat confused. I would say 85% of my training has been done in Zone 2 which SUCKS. Another 7-8% zone3 and barely any zone 4+.
Now the confusing part. Two road races, my average heartrate has been zone2. My crit race was averaging in zone 4 and my last road race averaged zone4(lost the break and paced with a group of 8).
So, obviously I need to start training in Zone 4. Weird though that two race averages have been Zone 2. Should I just treat this as a real long base and suck it up. Hit Zone4 and 5 and hope for better placing in the next couple months?

Although it's not too unreasonable to do a RR with an average HR in Z2, zones are as specific to the individual as max HR is (and different trainers/software have different ways of defining zones, too). I know my zones are quite different from the defaults in both Golden Cheetah and Strava, I have tweaked them a bunch.

Ive sat on some wheels where I'm doing 350 W - 400W wondering if it's going to ease up. I've also lost wheels where I was drafting at 450-550W and just blew up.

A buddy and I have completely different HR numbers (Max, LT, etc.). However, when we're at a similar fitness level, we hit about the same zone for the same effort. The difference is that I'm 20 beats faster.

40 minutes easy. I finally have my Felt put back together, so I was giving it a spin. It's going to take a bit to get used to the new bar and stem (low and narrow). It's a Ritchey bar and I like the drop shape. That's an easy win.
The legs felt like deuce, again. I hope they're feeling better tomorrow. I'd like to go play as opposed to just suck and suffer.

I hear ya. Me and rbart have a 94 km road race on Sunday and it's supposed to be near freezing and rain. I think I heard there were a lot of floods recently there to. To add to the excitement it's a race literally on the roads around a lake.. it's 3 hours away (4 for rbart?) and if the race gets cancelled there's not even a refund. Should be fun

Nope 3hrs or so for me as well...I tend to bend the rules when I'm on a mission to race
And yes, if it rains it's going to be miserable....I'm breaking out the winter gear that I just put away.

Set a new max HR on my ride this morning, 207. My previous best was 206, leading Gary Yates out for a sprint on our Tuesday night Worlds back in 2009 or 2010. Not too shabby for a 44 year old, 220-AGE my ass.
