When was your last hillclimb win? You're a 3, right? I won Diablo the past 2 years, and despite being 4th this year my time was 35s clear of the cat 3 winner.

Giving advice is easy. Come show us all how to train hard and push ourselves, or at least know who you're giving advice to. I have no redeemable cycling skill other than pushing myself to the limit for the duration.

The Merckx TT I won, there's been 1 dude in the history of the event to break 24min. It was me. Look at my profile pic. It's a compromise of power for aero.

I don't tell Ex to pedal harder in TTs. I ask what I can do to maximize my pace.

I am the same as many of you, more watts on the climbs by a good measure. I figure like you have all said that it is because of position and cadence, in addition to the fact that i stand and pull up on the pedals more when climbing. So more muscles involved. I can also recover at a much higher power number on the climbs, however it has not stopped me from being dropped every time the race goes up, so it doesn't really do me any good, other than mess up my power numbers.

Like waterrockets, I am trying to work on it and do more high RPM high power intervals this year to try and improved my flat TT power. It is working a little bit, but I don't see the difference ever going away, just looking for improvement in my flat TT duration power.

Sac River Ride. Smaller group with quite a few up at Cascade I assume and lots of wind, but still plenty of speed and plenty of attacks. Good fun.

This is a training thread. I'm talking about results in power tests on the flats and rollers.

Brilliant. I can't wait to cheer for you when Phil forgets your name on NBCSN.

And you think that's all you're going to get out of this sport? Don't limit yourself.

Did Phil get your name right on that one, at least?

wtf does pace/speed have to do with a power test? I'm saying that I've managed to equalize terrain differences for power tests, and I believe others can too. I don't pace myself like that in races, and I'm not suggesting it.

Good luck with your pro contract.

Solid advice @waterrockets. I do notice when I hammer it on the flats sometimes I will let up a bit because it is faster and things come up quicker. Pothole fields and blind intersections are things you have to negotiate out of faith. Ultimately, I think the big thing is you can drop your effort during certain points (negative false flats, tailwinds) and not notice it as distinctly.

One of the other reasons I test on hills is because there are no flat places to test. Not safely during rush hour. We have a bike trail which a lot of people TT on, but I'm not willing to blow by a 5 year old kid at 30 mph hoping he doesn't blindly chase a lizard just as I go by...

Our crit course is solid but I lose a tad bit cornering so much.

I was going to do another one today but I'm having chest pains from yesterday.

i dont see any difference for me on flat vs. hill, or indoor vs. outdoor for that matter.

for example, i did 20 minute tests indoors on a computrainer flat course and one on a climb that takes me about 21 minutes after the next block, same equipment, same power meter, calibrated, all that jazz. difference was like 2 watts, iirc.

i've also done 20' tests on my regular training soccerplex loop road and had the wattages be within 5W of the above referenced tests (indoor and on a climb).

there may be a difference in how the AP is arrived at but the AP ends up being about the same.

Why would you do a power test on the flats in a position you're not going to use on the flats? I train for racing, so I like to know what I'm capable of for that condition. Testing in a different position is going to result in a different number.

Thanks man, you too. Good luck with your advice columns; may we both experience success in our chosen disciplines.

Can't we all just get along?

The crushing defeat that was my ftp test seems to have sparked unstability and finger pointing amongst my mentors. What is this the Ukraine? I alone take full responsibility for this failure.

After reading it again starting to have my doubts this has anything to do with the test....

okay the only way to settle this little dispute is to have an e-wang measuring contents across all power durations. 1 point for the winner of each category. Guy with the highest total points wins. #the41meetsthe33

it's my fault. I respond poorly to unsolicited advice and worse to bad unsolicited advice. I guess in my regards to my reaction, I need to "train it."

I'll start with the e-wang

1 second 55 w/kg
5 second 54.99999 w/kg
1 minute: 37w/kg
5 minutes: 22 w/kg
20 minutes: 8 w/kg
1 hour 7.5435325355 w/kg

Therefore i am the greatest so everyone besides me is wrong.

No only that, but you make underhanded insults when feigning acceptance of blame. It's like you're all three of the dirty parts humans find in their underwear, all in one package.

It's not underhanded when it's so obvious as to be equal to the primary point; that I should have let it slide. It's totally overhanded.

Oversensitive? "Train it."

lol It's like I'm arguing with Costanza.

I guess I'll follow botto's lead on maintaining an ignore list. I can't have you wearing out my scroll wheel.
