I was riding my mtn bike today and when I glanced at my Garmin screen and saw the blank space for watts, I wondered how many people put PMs on mountain bikes? I'm thinking it would be useful for racing but I'm still in the stage of mountain biking where my fitness is far ahead of my technical skills so I barely even look at my Garmin for fear or taking my eyes off the trail and crashing.

No and I usually don't wear a HR monitor either. I hardly ever put mtb rides on strava, I did today because I got lost and wanted to look at the satellite map. I should be better about recording other/non road cycling activities. Swimming, hiking, yoga, running and mtn biking all contribute to fatigue and fitness but I don't track them consistently.

I do measure non-power-meter activities in calories burned haha! This morning's Mountain bike ride = one donut at the office meeting

It's always weird to see people riding 2 or 3x the distance I do, yet having the same TSS/calories/kJ/"suffer score" for a ride of similar time.
I got a new road bike because riding slowly (MTBs ain't fast on the road) on recovery days sucks, and because I found a pretty amazing deal on an 130mm BCD Hollowgram SRM.
I have it set up to display 1) 3s wattage 2) interval average 3) interval time 4) total average 5) total time.
As you'll discover, if you haven't already, unless you're riding/racing a set distance, metrics like distance and speed are more or less meaningless on the MTB.

I use HR to estimate TSS for MTB rides (woo alphabet soup). I am eager to put the power meter on the MTB partly for more accurate TSS, but mostly because I'm genuinely curious how the power output will compare to road rides given what a different type of effort it is. And for sure I'm only doing it because the power meter was so cheap (just over $300 for the SRAM X9 Stages on closeout through the LBS).

Easy ride....its going to get real next week as I will have to commute to work via bike. 12.5 miles each way, though there is a bus that cuts 7 miles off if need be. Our insurance offers a rental, but I declined it, for now. Going to see if I can survive carless.

Slightly different route today, and, unexpectedly, same mileage as yesterday: 55 miles. Tossed in a couple of sprint like efforts. General effort was a notch below tempo.

My lower back flared up again on Th... The only thing outside my normal routine was riding to work with a heavy loaded messenger back, but that's only 15min. I had no symptoms the day before and have been diligent about core work and stretching, it worries me that something so benign could wreck such havoc. I've got to figure out a way to go more than a few months without it acting up - I really need that consistency to see continual fitness improvement.
Anyway, it's not too severe, and already mostly better today. I have no doubt in my mind that i'll be back at it mid next week. Still, I've already missed two hard workouts. Grr...

My puritanical ewang throbs with an angry power. It is a space alien goop interloped upon the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. My ewang increases in girth and might and redness with each post made in the training status thread. My ewang is named Gunther and leads a hell or high water devil's blitzkreig against those who might attempt to thwart its plans for the destruction off this planet we call Earth.

I switched from a messenger to a backpack for my commute. Happy back. Wouldn't go back to the messenger bag.

Yet another week off has done wonders. July has been pretty easy, coasting on form (such as it is) is nice. I know it's going to bring out the dope-smoking jokes, but I'm psyched to start training for cyclocross next. Gotta bring the East Coast watts this fall.

Tested my resting heart rate this morning before having coffee. It was 38 bpm and I am old (61 years old) and not training for racing but riding about 8 hours per week mostly in Zone 2 but sometimes getting into SST levels from when I was still racing.
But I would need to drop a lot of weight to be competitive.
My oldest son is visiting and during the TdF coverage today my wife told him that I will be riding up Alpe D'Huez soon after I retire. My response was "That is a long walk with my bike. Doesn't sound like fun."
