raced killington this weekend (cat 3). i broke my collarbone 7 weeks ago and had to take some time off, so i wasn't expecting much here. just wanted to come race and have fun. here's the summary...
saturday: circuit race, 4 laps, 73 miles. 38F and raining hard. miserable. they shortened the race to 2 laps (37 miles). survived and finished with the pack. it started snowing soon after that.
sunday: road race, 61 miles. still around 40F at the start, but at least it didn't rain until the end. there were two crashes in front of me in the first hour. the second was 2 riders ahead, and i owe my survival to the KMS rider in front of me. no idea how we both stayed up. hung on to the tail of the lead group going up a tough climb (north road) in the middle of the race and unexpectedly set some new power PRs. there were maybe 35 of us together at the base of the last climb, with one guy a few minutes ahead. i think he got caught. i got dropped immediately and rode up alone, passing a few people...finished a little less than 3 minutes down from the winner. pretty happy with my fitness considering where i'm coming from, though. also, there were people skiing on the mountain at the finish.
monday: TT, ~10.6 miles. sunny and nice, but really freaking windy (cross-head). legs felt mediocre...but i passed my 30-second man in about 5 minutes and was gaining on my 1-minute man as well. then my rear tire flatted about 13 minutes in, just after i had passed the pit. had to walk back toward the pit for probably five minutes until someone finally gave me a ride the rest of the way. got a spare and just cruised in to the finish. meh. at least i wasn't really in contention for GC.
could have gone better, obviously, but i had a good time. glad to be racing again.

Junior race (yesterday)
Gs tenzing
after screwing up the cat 5 race I was nervous. Started off good, I had 3 teammates with me in the main group. 2 team mates of the front. They were cat 2. I had just met these people on the day. Talked some, they were nice. Dropped a few off the back. Group was probably around 9 out of 30. There were three cat 3, five cat 4, then me repping cat 5. Momma told me 3 laps left which I was super thankful. I don't race with a computer so I had to clue how far left. 3 laps to go. I pulled at a decent pace to try to keep the pace high. With 1 lap left I got really nervous. Just wanted to make it. The sprint was gonna be for 3rd place. I attacked on the outside before the last right turn. From the turn it was probably 200 meters. I sprinted out of the corner with a 10 yard gap probably. Then I sprinted as fast as I could. Unfortunately I don't know how to get out of the saddle while sprinting and I got passed with probably 50 yards left. Finished 5th in the sprint. 7th overall out of 30. Combining junior 1/2/3 and junior 4/5. Went over to the teams tent. They were really happy I hung with there cat 3 and they actually thought I lead out the 3rd place junior who's on the team. I was trying to get 3rd lol.
Thoughts - smaller fields are better
tiny kids swerving everywhere are scary especially a quarter mile from the ffinish
texas is WAY faster then Kansas
being on a team is fun
the women's field that I watched was super scary fast.
Cat 5 race this morning
texas state championships
started at 8 am, warmed up 3 laps of the super technical course. They did rollout right before the start meaning I had to start at the back. The back half formed a 2nd group, front half was the front group. After 2 laps I bridged up to the main group and really burned a lot of matches doing so. Went one lap at the very back of the main group. Then I went down. I wasn't wearing the team jersey since it smelled to high heaven and we couldn't wash it in the hotel. I was wearing my brand new castelli San remo 2.0 speedsuit that I had been saving up for forever. First race in it. Around the turn I got forced inside and my pedal clipped the curb at probably 20-25 mph. That's the last I remember. I was told I flew over the bars and face planted. Apparently I slid quite a ways. Then according to the guy that helped me I was almost unconscious and then I started coming around. My chain was off and I'm sure my wheels are out of true but a man put my chain back on I got 2 free laps. My speedsuit was shredded, ill get a picture up later. Bleeding from the knees, hips, and chest. Cut on my face. Other then that I was fine. They asked me if I wanted back in and I said yeah. Got back on the back of the first group and hung. My cornering coincidence sucked and I hung off the back. Stayed there until 2 laps to go. Got dropped and finished between the first group and the 2nd group. Mid pack. My hand is swollen badly and the team manager after said my thumb is sprained or fractured. Oh well. Could've been worse. At least I finished. Poor speedsuit
No juniors race for me later today, headed home I'm glad I went down to Dallas though. Lots of fun and I met lots of new people. Ill put up a picture of me after.

Excellent write-up. Not surprised that the last corner took out a few guys. As I was rolling back to the start line in the wheel truck, the official mentioned that it was something like a 150-degree turn. Coming out of a pretty fast straight, too. Good luck up in West Branch next weekend! Doing just the road race, or are you doing the crit as well?
ill try some crits as well, though I'm a bit scared! lol I'll be doing all the races listed here:

Correct.
You could have a point to point Cat 5 race on a closed dead straight 6 lane interstate and there would be at least 4 crashes. In a pro race you might get one too. And I've watched people crash into each other on 6 MPH climbs.
Crashes happen because people
a) are not paying attention
b) are taking a bad line
c) are poor bike hadnlers
d) panic

it was, but aside from hands and feet, i was actually ok. two base layers + rain shell + jersey, in that order. skull cap + cycling cap + cling-wrapped helmet. rubber gloves + wool gloves + outer gloves. plastic wrap lining shoes. two layers of bibs/tights with a plastic bag in between. i probably weighed 200 lbs, but at least i didn't freeze.
wsu - heal up quickly. zitter - congrats!

Texas State Crit Champs - cat 3. Started 3rd row back in mediocre position. Second lap, crash delayed me and I ended up at the back. 0.7 mi and 10 turns made it difficult to move up. with 5 to go I finally got up in the top 20. With 2 to go, top 10. Last lap, some guys divebombed the inside of a corner and put me back in like 15th. Finished 11th.
I never once saw the front of the race. Like I just couldn't get there. I fought for position the entire time and until the last 10 laps didn't come close to being in a competitive position. It was hard and I sucked. 93ish people in the field. I think 50 finished. No legitimate breakaway attempts formed.

Iron Horse Omnium B (3/4) Women, 40-49. Age group competes both for age group and for the overall B podium (weird, and sucks for the non age group chicks).
RR - 10th/35 age group, 27/97 overall. course is Durango to Silverton, 47 miles, 5500' climbing & 2700' descending, with two passes over 10,000 feet. It rolled out slow-ish, I stayed in the top 10 which was good b/c some people behind crashed into some hard-to-see cones. I got dropped when the real climbing started, worked with some people, but once it was over about 10,000' elevation I just couldn't do any more than ride tempo, every time I tried I just got dizzy, so I just rode my pace. Descended better than usual for me, sprinted past one gal on the final 1 mile false flat.
Crit: 7/7 age group, 10/17 overall. 8 corners, with 2 separate blocks of climbing & 2 separate blocks of descending. It went out fast, the eventual winner took a flyer and stayed off for about 6 laps, I was clinging to the back of the chase, getting gapped off in the downhill corners but getting back on w/o too much trouble. THe chase caught the leader, and it mellowed for a couple laps, then some pedestrians walked right out into the middle of the race course, I made a bad decision about which way to go around them, and had to come almost to a stop when they started to run. Another gal was gapped off with me and she and I worked together but lost ground on the main pack. We started attacking each other/trying to make the other pull at about 3 to go, and she got away at the last downhill corner. I sprinted past one straggler.
TT: 6 / ?? age group, 9 / ?? overall (unofficial, official hasn't been posted yet). Course is 13.7 miles, about 11 rolling then a steep climb and then a false flat. I forgot my TT helmet at home. My powertap told me I was doing 110 watts, and I decided it was lying and stopped looking at it, and rode by HR/RPE. It felt great, I paced it just how I wanted, and I had Vaughter's voice in my head saying "full gas" every time the uphills rolled over into downhills. I was really pleased, it felt like my best TT yet. bummed I have no power data on it. Time was longer than last year, which I felt I paced poorly, and place was probably about the same, so I just totally do not understand TTing I guess, it felt great but the result was not. I did beat my team mate's time, I have never beaten her before, so that is something, I guess.
Omnium: unknown.
I like the RR and TT courses for this Omnium, but the crit course is b.s. and the lack of accurate results... I don't think I'll do this again.

A rider(Chris Contreras) passed away today in a crit in Socal
Very sad news. I rode with him once(never really knew him personally). 47 years old. Wife was there with their kid.
Word is beginning to circulate that there was a tragic crash during today's CBR Memorial Day Criterium. Velo Pasadena racer, Chris Contreras, passed away at hospital as a result of injuries suffered after hitting a light standard at full speed during the Pro race. When I hear more, I will let you know as appropriate. My condolences to Chris's family, friends, and teammates.

But.. the officials don't know if you went down or not, just pull up your bib leg a bit and say you went down.
However - the real answer is not to get caught behind the crash in the first place, stay further up in the field. And as for junior rollouts, the juniors in the local 1/2 fields get right back into their spot in the front after rollouts, you don't always have to end up on the back.
Nice!!
