It's become dull because he's so dominant . . . you can't really fault his endorsements or fan base for that, they came second, and will go away as soon as his dominance does. Chicken and egg I suppose.

I fault those who ride against LA (for riding for second) if the cycling is boring but I kind of agree with Velocipedio about the marketing side of the business (although I don't think cultification is a US thing). Beckham and Schumacher are marketing machines worldwide but are virtually unknown in the US.

There has been a trend over the last 20 years or so in the US to manufacture stars. Back in the day it used to be about the team (Celtics/Lakers) and then it became individual based (Bird/Magic). Anyone remember the NBA after Jordan retired? It was embarassing how they were trying to market good players as "superstars".

It's all about the hype and endorsement money... LA is just the vehicle the marketing companies use - at least he is good/deserving of the hype and money (as opposed to an athlete such as Kournakova who never won a major tournament).

talk about not boring and real life following marketing I will always think the cyclocross (SP) move to avoid the other crashing rider the coolest move ever. especially after the adds featuring LA leading the pac thru the single trac.

No fans = no sports, and Lance is just another guy that can ride his bike really far on the side of the road.
So you're saying that Armstrong should be obligated, rather than the sport itself?
Isn't he doing enough by racing at all?
I think it's nice to see athletes actually have a little bit of freedom.

Surely most fathers in the peloton don't have the money or talent to just decide to do a few races a year, on a personally chosen schedule.

I don't see the point in watching pro cycling at all, with that view.
Surely the whole idea of pro racing is to be as professional as possible, no?

and i don't watch much. what i do like is races with drama: roubaix and flanders. the tour de france is just such a geek fest these days and, as charming as i find phil and paul, they do wear after a week. "see those tires phil, they're pumped up to an amazing 110 lbs of pressure; those riders can feel every crack in the road."

the bottom line for me is that the top grand tour riders are biochemically enhanced supermen riding cycling technology that i can barely understand, let alone attain. i have trouble relating to them.

now, whem i see someone suffering along the pave of northern france and flanders, there's something i can get behind.
