I wasn't there, but the report from a couple of teammates is that at the last turn somebody got literally blown off the ground by a gust of wind, into the pack, and there was a pileup requiring a couple of ambulances. One guy broke his bike in half and both collarbones.

3 total broken collarbones, 2 for one guy. He rides for TRT. Sucks. It was apparently just after the last turn, not reallu sure wind had that much to do with it, I think they were all mid pack but I didn't see it, just relaying the info I got. I saw one of the bikes, not belonging to the double collarbone guy, broken fork and broken frame, but it was in one piece.

The wind wasn't as bad as last week but it was still a major factor, all the fields were shattered. I'm cooked.

I always say that I don't want to race anywhere below westchester. Plus I need to stay away from the 5s. The Accused was touting the fact that this was his third race and he had done well in Brooklyn. Proven right again.

Seriously though, I felt the sketch. I should have just gone off the front or called it a day. I thought I could just stay ahead of it, but when the group slowed, there they come again.
Arg. Last thing you need. Jeepers.

And for root cause analysis… video really, really helps. Hence I try to wear my camera every race, because when I hit the deck I wasn't wearing one, and the guy that intentionally swerved across the road actually asked me prior to the race if I'd be wearing the camera.

That didn't bode well and the stuff after… jeepers again.

This was just posted from the 4/5 race
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0hZ8qXY3Y0

Apparently, it was this guys 4th race. I want to give the benefit of the doubt, however this team has a reputation for this kinda of stuff. I've seen it in a few times and have heard through the grapevine that occurs frequently with them. Sad part, the dude who runs the team is super nice guy.

What did you see? I saw a guy get hip checked by a guy off camera and lose it.

When I get back to the start a usa cycling official is looking to talk to me because people are accusing another guy of intentionally taking people out. The accused is pointing at me and saying that I saw what happened and that it was another guy with two bar end mirrors. Nope, I didnt. I saw the squirrely guy with the two bar ends mirrors, but other than that. No idea. As I was walking back with the accused from where we crashed I was getting the feeling he might have been the problem, based on the ranting he was doing about bar end guy, and when I got back to the start others apparently thought the same. I guess they are going to go to the video tape and there may be suspensions.
Follow Alex Koch on strava. He has a video of the crash and people are discussing the topic there.

I wasn't in this race; video was sent and re posted several times on facebook. I had a few friends in the race and the common theme is that this rider had caused several crashes today.

Which rider? The guy who hit the deck in the video? If so I'd be a lot more concerned about whoever took him out.

The yellow/black rider on the red bike is accused of chopping the wheel of the guy who went down (no offscreen hip check). He later crashed out himself (I think) and somebody else.

I know the guy who filmed the video you linked to, he is a reasonable and normal person. He says he doesn't think there was malice, just incompetence.

If anybody really cares, yellow/black red bike clearly feels he was chopped by the red/black guy in front of him as seen in this video from a different bike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5aSJp2yWKA

And then in this third angle, the crash is at 9:47, and yellow/black red bike is seen griping at red/black post crasho at 10:06: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfgXZrM8h8A
I guess later in the race, yellow/black red bike succeeded in crashing out red/black.

Never in history has a 4/5 crash been so thoroughly filmed.

To be clear, my only connection to any of this is that I know one of the guys who posted video, and he's not part of the witch hunt brigade.

My eyes see someone not used to contact overcorrecting into the yellow/black rider's rear wheel. Not that yellow/black rider has any business making contact in a 4/5 race.

Edit: this is in response to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0hZ8qXY3Y0

That second video...I mean guys move around. Yellow/black should've been paying more attention.

Do guys just not learn these skills on group rides anymore?

It's actually an interesting example of different angles giving really different impressions.

In this inflammatorily titled video, it looks like yellow/black throws an elbow at red/black and then goes down:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5aSJp2yWKA

In this video, you can't even see red/black, yellow/black obviously doesn't crash, instead it looks like yellow/black chops the wheel of gray, who goes down. The elbow seen in the previous video even works in yellow/black's defense, because it appears to have been caused by reacting to contact rather than initiating it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0hZ8qXY3Y0

In this video, you can't see the crash at all, but clearly yellow/black feels he was wronged by red/black:

From all of those, it looks to me like Yellow/Black overreacts and down goes grey, DOWN GOES GREY!

There's something funky going on this year, everyone has developed cataracts and inner ear issues. I blame fracking.

This one shows me going down. I'm in the blue POC helmet, moving up a bit in the wind. (It was the last lap and this felt like the safest and easiest way to gain some ground. Feel free to critique my technique.) The crash is at about 6:15. It's interesting to see what happened. There were two guys in front of me who managed to avoid the crash by swerving out of the way. From the look of it here, it seems like I could have done the same thing. Thinking back on it though, it felt like the guy on the ground just appeared in front of me. I'd like to be able to learn from this, but I'm not sure how.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTsrlEBw6Y0

I you look at the video youtube will suggest all the other videos of the race. It's crazy how many angles there are of this.

Also there is a number 74 in the videos wearing a red jacket. He is the one that the Accused is blaming. The Accused is the one in the yellow and black. He is the one the officials were considering suspending.

Doesn't look like much you could do there, the guy in front of you saw it developing but being a wheel further back you probably had less warning.

I like the two guys deciding to go for a ride in the woods.

It turns out I know another guy who crashed in that race (3 crashes, he was the 1st, all the video above is the 2nd, you were the 3rd). Collarbone, 3 ribs. Glad you came out relatively unhurt, island rider!
