Garmin ate my ride yesterday, post firmware update. PC8 releases in December, allegedly.

revchuck 09-07-14 08:14 AM

Shovel and CDR - Thanks! Looks like the Conti Sprinter and Vittoria Corsa Elite are about what I'm looking for. Since I work at a Specialized shop and can get stuff at around cost, I'm also thinking about the Specialized Turbo Allaround, which isn't in stock yet, but should be before long. Shoot, Specialized has a training tubular with an MSRP of $40...might get a pair of those to practice mounting tubulars.

Fudgy - FWIW, my 500 has yet to eat a ride in the three years I've had it. Might be time to downgrade. ;)

pre-order list is starting this week, and december IS the anticipated timeframe. i wouldn't hold my breath on an actual release date. wholesale/retail pricing have not been announced.

i knew you'd come full-circle from your stance a few years ago. :)

seriously, though, assuming the 8 is as reliable as the 7 as far as data recording, the additional features (particularly GPS) should appeal to a broader audience. i'm hopeful they'll price it so it is at least on-par with something like the edge 1000 but sort of doubt it. the 7 was $750 (retail) for years (and SO worth it), so i suspect the 8 might be even more.

will find out soon.

MattM: i think this will work: Wheels Manufacturing PF30-CAMP

It was listed under the Specialized Carbon Option.

RevChuck: I've run Conti GP4000 and Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tubulars. They both work well. I stocked up on Sprinters and Corsa Elites a couple months ago when my buddy was cleaning out his shop and selling me anything I wanted at cost.

i've had the edge 305, 705, 500, 700, and various other handheld units (i was a tester). they all have a history of data corruption (more frequently with some units than others, easier to repair with some units than others). i would not say it is common, but it happens from time to time.

there are some user behaviors that can reduce the possibility (like deleting rides after they are downloaded, holding reset for 5" after every ride, not powering down before pressing stop AND saving, etc.), but the bottom line is a recording device should NEVER require the user to take extra steps to ensure a basic function (saving a ride) is performed.

garmin is issuing patches, which are nice -- but the real solution is to have the device record whenever the attached sensors (cadence, power, HR, possibly speed if it's a magnet on the wheel) are transmitting.

I'm sure the pc7 is fine gadgetry, but no GPS meant it was a non-starter to me, that's all.

revchuck 09-07-14 06:47 PM

teton - To be honest, while my 500 hasn't eaten a ride directly after the ride and I haven't lost data, I have had files get corrupted and require a hard reset a couple of times. I always download a ride directly afterwards, or nightly during a stage race. I haven't resorted to doing anything complicated.

i understand the GPS is critical for you (and many). that's why they added it--it'll open up the universe of potential buyers. i like gps imbedded in the device, but it's subordinate to data integrity.

(you used to argue with me that garmin data loss wasn't really an issue. it just is. it's a shame because there are many great aspects to the units and the price is lower than the SRM, though there's a reason for that.)

yeah...for me, a corrupt file = lost data. with the devices like the 305 & 705, they stored data in plain text (well, it was essentially contained in an XML wrapper). if the ride was important, you could go in and salvage some or all of it by hand.

the newer devices use .FIT files (binary). they're harder to repair, and in most cases i find that they cannot be repaired.

it's not like these devices lose data constantly -- far, far from it. but even a file or 2 in a year is too much (for me) when the device's intended purpose is to record data.

topflightpro 09-08-14 07:37 AM

I've lost one big ride on my Garmin that had me pretty ticked. And I've had to do a hard reset a couple of times. I'm not on Strava, so I don't need GPS, but since I've had it, I kind of like it.

Goin forward, I like that the 510 offers the ability for others to track you mid ride.

I need some shoe recommendations: Aside from Sidi Megas do any other manufacturers make a shoe with a big toe box? Anyone know anything about the Pearl Izumi Pro Leader shoes?

No expertise, but check Praxis Works. I believe they have a conversion BB that will work for you.

I think what I have is the Alu OSBB.. it has an alu shell inside, and measured 42mm(?), which was what I think Spec says the alu bb is.

Anyway my current/old bb30 setup has the adapter (similar to the pf30 adapters) so I'm hoping those will work.. got the tool today (just when I thought I had all the park tools!), so if I can get the damn adapters out of the old bb, I'll find out quick enough if they fit in the new one or not. This is all new to me!!

shovelhd 09-08-14 01:13 PM

Just to be clear, the Praxis Works is a conversion BB, not an adapter.

I can't wait to ditch my edge 500 in about a month for a pc7. It will take a lot for me to ever buy a garmin product again. Their heart rate straps also suck.

Yeah I'm just hoping I don't need it!

To further complicate this build, Specialized apparently has "specialized" internal cable routing that I need some more hardware for.. I have a new appreciation for every bicycle I see though, after seeing how complicated all this **** is.

This is all so weird; my 705 has lost maybe one ride in the 5 years I've had it.

It's huge (compared to today's computers), but seems work really well.

hack 09-08-14 02:36 PM

knocking on wood, but i've never lost a ride with the 510. my routine goes as follows: hit start, ride bike, stop riding bike, hit stop, hit save, upload to whatever (garmin, strava, etc).

I may be lazy, but internal routing is one of the areas I'm content paying a shop to work on for me. Saves me from being frustrated.

Bontrager shoes have a bigger toe box than Sidi Megas, PIs, or Specialized wide shoes. I went through so many shoes trying to find one with enough room for bunions, when I found the Bontragers I bought 3 pairs.

I still don't care about the data loss as much as I care about the gps loss. I can find an approximately equal ride in TSS from the 2500 gps files I have. I can't find approximate rides for my segment times!

I never argued the pc7 was bad. I argued against the statement that the pc7 was better, and specifically (note the quotes) "more pro."

;)

Strava is serious bizness.

some 5 minute power interval on a Wednesday morning is more? Some USAC race with 25 guys and 3 spectators is more?

a measure is a measure is a measure. They all have their pros and cons.

Buy a map.

you misunderstand the need for gps. I've never used the mapping function. I like the record of where I was. You know, STRAVA and before that Garmin Connect and before that Ascent.
