ed073 is close enough. After winning stage 17 of the Giro last year, Tonkov expressed his unhappiness over several teams that have abandoned him including in 2002 Lampre which opted not to renew his contract despite his mountain stage win in that year's Giro and CCC-Polstat which picked him up but failed to pay him halfway through the season.

Awright....
In the wake of Super Mario's retirement I've got a Cipo question.
1994 Vuelta....Mario Cipollini crashed out within sight of the finish line at well over 60kmh in a bunch sprint, suffering major contusions, abrasions, facial injuries etc. One rider was obviously to blame as he switched across the road and took out Mario's front wheel.
Who was it and what team did he ride for?

I think he raced until he was nearly 40....six days etc. I think he's now a directeur at Phonak.

A fairly easy one since I'm hitting the rack: Who held the record for stage victories at the Giro d'Italia before Mario Cipollini broke it, how many victories did that man have, and when did he set that mark (or how old was the record when Mario broke it)?

Good enough, Smoothie. The record was 70 years old when Cipo broke it.
Binda won the Giro five times (1925, 1927-1929, 1933) and the first Giro mountains competition in 1933. He was paid a winner's sum to not race in 1930, because the race organizers thought his participation would dull public interest if he won again.
He won the first World Championship in 1927. He won three Worlds.
Binda also coached the Italian team at the Tour de France when Coppi and Bartali were going at each other.
A true god of cycling.

stuff it, I'm asking one...
Who's this? (easy)
What race is it?
Who won?
But more importantly, why does he describe it as his "toughest day in the saddle"?
