I'm starting to flirt with the idea of going back to school. Can't seem to get to where I want to be in a career that seems stable, and I'm frustrated enough that just doing anything different sounds good. Life is frustrating.
Maybe start looking into moving to the left Coast too, I hear there's a shortage of people out there.

This is the #1 fallacy being thrown out there. Security has many layers. If you shard data across many servers it's more secure than in one place behind a firewall. This is geek thread stuff though. I built my first cloud computing platform five years ago. You want to discuss the subject, let's do it over there.

"I find large, negative wage effects of graduating in a worse economy which persist for the entire period studied. I also find that cohorts who graduate in worse national economies are in lower-level occupations, have slightly higher tenure and higher educational attainment, while labor supply is unaffected. Taken as a whole, the results suggest that the labor market consequences of graduating from college in a bad economy are large, negative and persistent."
The long-term labor market consequences of graduating from college in a bad economy
So the conclusion is either get used to changing jobs all the time, or try graduating again when the economy is good I think. This whole thing is frustrating.

Graduating (without any relevant work experience) with a masters when the economy is in the toilet is also very frustrating.

Mechanical engineering. No idea what I'd go back to school for, by reputation an MBA would be the pragmatic option, but I don't know if that's actually the case. If I went for what seems most interesting, some kind of exercise physiology. Masters in engineering is somewhere in between those two in both pragmatism and interest.
Complete career change, maybe. There aren't that many industries that have significantly better job prospects than engineering though. That brings me to moving, which is a maybe. I've tried before and struggled to even get calls back from employers, but maybe a couple years more experience would change that.
I'm frustrated feel like what I've been doing isn't really working, but I haven't figured out what changes would have the most impact. If the cost of any of the above wasn't so high I'd just start doing something, but getting part way through any of those and realizing it won't work would suck a lot.

My angle is different, but I am also looking at re-starting my career (racing age - 37). I am looking into entering the adult world again after staying at home with my sons for a few years. The 60-80 hours weeks that were part of my academic career before are just not appealing now, and the jobs are also scarce. Bike mechanic has been lots of fun for the last couple of years part-time, but seriously, I cannot build a career on retail worker wages.
For me, the best looking option is an apprenticeship in a skilled trade. I mean, any number of jobs rise and fall with economic fluctuations, but in Canada HVAC is pretty much essential. Can't get around needing plumbers or electricians either. Elevator mechanic seems similarly recession-safe, I mean, they aren't going to stop running elevators because of recession, are they? Well, perhaps, but I have never seen an economic downturn bite that deep in Canada. Also, I get to spend most of my time working, so instead of paying tuition and taking out loans, I can simultaneously earning a pay cheque.

I live on the CT coast. I truly believe that a skilled craftsman with some business sense could be really successful here. If you can wire a socket and can actually show up and give an estimate, on time, politely and in English (as opposed to trade-speak)... you can lock up a large market.
