No thanks, those 800s and beyond are just way too much for me.

Thanks again for the offer in regards to the trying some wheels, and I would still like to if the offer still stands.

My purchase of carbon wheels was offset by ~6 months recently, due to my decision to make a separate cycling-related purchase first (new bike), so it hasn't been on my mind lately.

I'm considering a standard Garmin 500, but the 510 and 520 are also appealing. I don't care about the social media aspect, but being able to wirelessly upload rides via bluetooth and my phone sounds sweet, plus they offer an improved GUI to make them nicer to use everyday. Still, the 500 comes at a lower price point, and covers all the bases that I need.

Also, I've been intrigued by the Lezyne Devices (Super GPS), but there are some issues that users post about online and it doesn't have much support which is scary (last update 12/2015). Hmm.

Opinions?

/41_refugee-thread
I recently got a 520 when my 500 died - the buttons stopped working on the 500 after four years of almost daily use. The 520 is a definite improvement over the 500, but the 500 did everything I needed.

TMonk, are you going to go used then? I've been kinda sorta looking for a new GPS unit as well, but haven't seen any 500s other than used or refurb ones. And the refurbs I've seen aren't much less than a new 520.

Lemme know if you know a guy, eh?

The 500 works fine, but the 520 is better in every respect.

For those of you who use Powertaps, note that there has been a relatively recent (March '16) firmware update. To get it, you have to download the most recent version of Poweragent. The release notes are here.

You had me excited. Doesn't look like it's for my ancient 2.4 SL. Maybe I don't understand their lingo though. G3/GS hubs? Powercap? BLE?

On the topic of computers, does the 520 (or any other computer) give you a sort of cue sheet for a ride that you input? I don't need a full blown map like the 800 or 1000, but it would be nice sometimes to just see "R on Rt 31 - 1.2 miles" or something at the top. Just the next turn, and maybe you can click it and see the next 5 turns or something. Would stop me constantly digging in my pocket for my cue sheet.

I have a PC8. My wife has a 520. We both previously had 500s - Mine died, she killed hers (broke the tabs off the back, and the replacement option I bought didn't work well).

Sometimes, I envy the many features on her 520 that my PC8 doesn't have. But, I really like the screen size on my PC8. And hers cost a third of mine.

The 500 can give you somewhat crude turn by turn directions if you upload a route (the route format exported from Strava doesn't support this, but other services like ridewithgps do).

The 520 can give turn by turn directions or an actual map. See here for directions on uploading free openstreetmaps: How to download free maps to your Garmin Edge 705/800/810/1000 & Touring

Both are mostly fine, and the 520 is better than the 500, but honestly when following a new route (which I don't do that often) if there is confusion it's often easier to just get out my phone. The saving grace of the 520 maps is when you're in way out in the sticks with no cell service.

Edit: gc answered that better than I did.

That's the main reason I'm still using a 705, I don't know the roads too well around here yet and program rides in to get turn by turn directions. The thing is giant though, so I'd like to downsize and get some new features if I can. 520 seems to be the best option.

520 seems like what I would want, except for the whole not having an Ant+ power meter thing. I'm not even sure if they're still upgrading, I just sent an e-mail to check.

Maybe for my birthday my wife will get me a 520, and a crank based power meter for both road and track bikes, and a heart rate sensor, and a cadence/speed sensor for each bike, and some new wheels for both.

I'm sure.

Yes, it's spelled wrong. Google redirects the wrong spelling to the right search result. I was just being snarky though. As Feynman said, the purpose of language is communication.

squiggly red lines betray me. google betrays me. wikipedia returns a google result of the wrong spelling which is just a redirect to the wikipedia page with the correct spelling.

There are so many results for the wrong spelling it might as well be an accepted alternate.

There are words that are so commonly misused that the "incorrect" definition has become accepted. Examples are "literally" meaning figuratively, or "nonplussed" meaning unimpressed.

Thanks for the reviews all. The 520 is appealing, but I can get the 500 100 bucks less. @rankin116 I don't have any special hookups or deals.

Seems like Garmin has quite the monopoly on this market, no surprise there. Does anyone have experience with devices from other mfg's? It must be ant+ compatible. I mentioned Lezyne earlier.

do you happen to know how one can disable the annoying Garmin segments, which seems to be part and parcel of the mapping function

I have the Edge 1000. The screen size is great, because you can check with a quicker glance. The additional features aren't really worth it, even if you have Vectors.

I just ride and explore roads. Then when I get lost, I pull out my phone, hope I have a signal, and figure out where the heck I am and how to get home from there. This is a bigger issue when I go to the mountains than around here.

The Wahoo Element seems to get good reviews. I'm thoroughly pleased with our kickrs so I would probably get an Element if I was in the market. Our 500s would either have to die horribly or get stolen for that to happen though.

I could steal your 500 and you could get an Element if you'd like. Win-win.

Well, now that your wife coaches me I don't want to get lost and do a 4 hr ride when I'm scheduled for only a 3.5 hr ride!

A local team uses the Wahoo and I look at their strava files from time to time. I've seen so many races where the ANT+ data just stops recording. I think they have a few more kinks to workout before I'd consider one.
