It sounds like you are not trying to keep the bike original for collector purposes. If that is the case, can you get rid of the cottered cranks and substitute some other crank? Cottered cranks suck from A to Z; difficult to maintain, difficult to repair, difficult to replace parts, Damned near impossible to get cotter pins out most of the time...
