I had experience on those old 105 STIs after a minor crash. The inside of the cap chipped/broke and was trapped inside the lever. IF you shake it it would rattle. Had to replace the cap and remove the chipped part by dismantling the lever.

I have new STIs now, and I try not to break those fragile caps .
