Thanks ks1g. I did read your earlier thread, which is why I quoted it a couple of posts up. I just wanted to confirm that this was possible. I don't want to commit to buying one and then find I can't use it for what I want.

As you say 38 mm may be overkill for many tracks, I'll probably use 32 mm cross tyres most of the time. Before the advent of mountain bikes I used to ride 32 mm (well 1 1/4'' in those days) for all sorts of tracks and trails.
