Most bikes are still Mao-style beaters - huge tires, sprung saddles, fenders, full chain cages, albatross handlebars, integrated locks and front baskets. Modern road bikes are rare in a conservative city in Beijing, and only slightly more present in funky/fresh Shanghai. I saw many more folding bikes than Euro racing bikes, which is sensible and appropriate, I guess.
