Because they are unreliable expensive junk, with no wireless option either (not that wired is really bad).
For every one person who likes it, there are 2 who complain of missed shifts and problems.
IMHO, the whole gear in reserve mentality is the wrong way to climb. You should be riding in the right gear, regardless if its your lowest. Struggling to climb a hill in too high a gear, so you don't have to shift to your bailout gear is not going to get you up the hill faster.
I should have specified better. If I know I'm in my 50x21 and have a 23 left on a climb, then I know to hammer just a bit harder to make the 21 work at optimum cadence and speed and not have to use the 23. Its a mental training tool and quite effective.
