On Friday, September 8, early in the morning, our graduate and friend Matt Wilhelm died in the Intensive Care Unit at Carle Hospital, of injuries suffered when the bicycle he was riding was struck by an automobile. According to the News-Gazette, the driver of the car was distracted by a cell phone.
Many students in the Honors House, and all of us on the staff, remember Matt as a brilliant student of extraordinary energy and spirit. He came to us from University Laboratory High School -- just up the street in Urbana -- with a record that would have won admission to top schools all over the country. He majored in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Technology and Management -- and his overall academic record here was spectacular. But Matt was much more to us than a perfect academic record. He loved the outdoors, loved exercise and competition against his own physical limits; and he loved sharing his skills with others. When he applied to the CHP, he wrote eagerly that he wanted to "join a bicycle club to become fit and see the countryside. I am hoping there is some hang-gliding or ultra-light airplane interests group I can join ... so I can pursue my dream of flying."
He dreamed of flying in many senses of the word, and in many ways he soared. Matt wanted to do research, complete an internship program, help with Engineering Open House, be a mentor to younger students; and during his time at Illinois, many peers and collective efforts benefited from his creativity and his energy. This was a young man with a big heart, wholesome dreams, and enormous vitality.
We are thankful that Matt Wilhelm was part of our group, and that he will stay with us in our history and our memory.
