I think this is up to debate. Let's take an example: 400Watts*175mm*.5 seconds = 701.5 Newton-meters.
If this is the input into systems with a 48t chainring (say 120mm radius) and a 24t chainring (say, 85mm radius) the output forces on the chain are 5,845N and 8,253N, respectively.
It's obvious that mashing on your bike is hard on it, but can folks explain what is wrong with my math or else why it is insignificant?
