in general, do you guys ride all year long? I can ride down to 30 degrees in chicago—any lower I better have a good reason to ride. that usually means all year save for a month or so when it's too cold or too slick. I'm under the impression weather is milder (though hotter in the summer) out there.

thanks again.

I do for the most part. Yes the summers can be pretty bad. We usually get a string of 95+ degree days in July and August. It is crazy humid. But the winters are milder than in Chicago. We also tend to get a string of 60+ degree days in winter too. You just never know. We just had a couple of weeks of mild weather and it was wonderful. It rarely gets below 25 (as a high temp) in the day time during winter. In fact it is usually in the 30's and 40's for most of the winter.

As far as snow goes....you could get 30 inches in a day, or nothing more than flurries the whole winter. But likely you will see no more than 6 inches at a time, and no more than a foot of snow total for the winter. But since our snow fall is so erratic, our drivers are complete idiots. Not helping the matter is the poor street maintenance.

The plowing is virtually non-existant in some residential areas and most of Philly itself excluding center city. Yes, it may just take them a week to plow your street. One of my employees lives in Mount Airy and has many tales of all of his neighbors on his block hand shoveling the street so that they can get their cars out and go to work. It is a beautiful display of team work, but I am sure they would rather just wake up to a plowed street.

Also since we cannot guarantee a certain level of snowfall, many townships play chicken with the weather and only budget for a "normal" winter in terms of salt. They start to skimp in certain areas and we have often been hit with some nasty ice storms where an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure. I don't mean to scare you off, but the quality of snow and ice removal is probably not going to meet your expectations coming from Chicago. Since we don't get a lot of snow, it won't affect your life much either.

Check out www.weather.com and look at averages and records for the area. That should give you a good idea as to what to expect.
